New York Boulders News Release

(Pomona, NY) - The Boulders were certainly due for a sloppy performance after heading into Thursday's game on a 15-1 hot streak. The mistakes came in the field, on the base paths, and even at the plate in the form of missed opportunities. Despite the mental lapses, Rockland managed to pull out the victory and series sweep in exciting fashion.

The bottom of the first inning saw Junior Arrojo get caught stealing and Stephen Cardullo caught trying to stretch a single into a double. Rockland bounced back in the 2nd inning, however, where a Charlie Law triple plated one of the two runs scored.

The lead would not last, though, as sloppy play in the field in the top of the 3rd allowed three runs to score for the Miners. On two occasions in the inning the Boulders failed to turn routine double plays. On the first, a wide throw to second by Papaccio led to all runners reaching safely. The second double play recorded an out at second but a late throw allowed John Talley to reach first base safely. A miscommunication on the play allowed two runs to score and was a reflection of much of the day for Rockland.

The Boulders bounced back to tie in the bottom of the inning on a Stephen Cardullo RBI single. The Boulders' habit of responding quickly continued in the 5th where, after allowing a run in the top half, the Boulders retook the lead with the help of a Junior Arrojo double and stolen base which put him in position to score on a fielders choice.

In the top of the sixth it was Salazar who would surrender the runs. A two run blast by Kenny Bryant gave the Miners a 6-5 lead. In Boulders fashion, though, it would not last and an Alex DeBellis solo shot would tie things up at six.

Then, in the final frame the Boulders were presented with a situation they would take any day of the week. Joe Maloney at the plate with bases loaded, two outs, and the opportunity to walk it off. Unfortunately for Rockland, Maloney would pop out and leave the game winning run standing on third.

The night of errors and missed opportunities finally caught up to the Boulders in the 11th inning where, per Can-Am rules, Kenny Bryant led off with a runner already on second base. The lefty would smash his second homerun of the night to give the Miners an 8-6 lead.

Just as earlier in the game, the Boulders would respond. With Papaccio starting the inning on second Byron Wiley would walk. After a sac bunt from Jared McDonald, Stephen Cardullo came up to bat with two runners in scoring position. With two strikes and two outs, Cardullo would drive in both runs to tie the game at eight. With the chance, once again, to drive in the winning run with Cardullo on second, Joe Maloney would go down swinging.

In the top of the 12th the Miners again took advantage of the Can-Am extra inning rule and John Talley drove in Jamal Austin to take the 9-8 lead. As they had done much of the night, the Boulders responded with a game-tying sac fly from Steve Nyisztor to score Joe Maloney.

The Boulders were finally able to end the long night in the bottom of the 13th. With bases loaded and no outs Junior Arrojo drove in the deciding run to give Rockland the 10-9 victory and series sweep.

The Boulders will look to bounce back on Friday at home against the Garden State Grays. For more information, slide to www.RocklandBoulders.com or call (845) 364-0009 to speak to a representative.
