Late Comeback Erases Five-Run Deficit

Trailing by five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning the Calgary Vipers rallied to defeat the Edmonton Capitals 10-9 before 1704 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Down 8-3 the Vipers scored three runs in the seventh to get within two and after the Capitals got a tally back in the eighth the Snakes scored four runs in the bottom of the frame to take their first lead of the game. Rick Guarno had a monster game for Calgary as he went three-for-four with two home runs, three batted in, and two scored. With the win the Vipers have won two straight and take the three-game-series with Edmonton with a chance to sweep on Sunday. The Snakes are now 37-16 overall to lead the entire Golden Baseball League and 11-3 in the second half to lead the North Division.

Dallas Mahan made another excellent appearance out of the bullpen throwing three scoreless innings without walking a batter. Mac Suzuki (5) recorded the save in pitching a scoreless ninth frame that included a game ending strike'em out, throw'em out double play. Andrew DeMott (3-0) picked up the win as he was the pitcher of record when the Vipers rallied in the eighth inning. Edmonton closer Jason Pearson (1-3) was saddled with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run.

Edmonton jumped onto the scoreboard in a big way in the top of the first inning as Jorge Cortes and Mark Okano hit back-to-back doubles for a run, Darryl Brinkley singled, Joey Gomes reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases, Walter Young singled in two, and Chad Ehrnsberger plated a run with a base hit for a 4-0 lead.

Calgary got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Nelson Castro tripled for the fourth time this season and scored on a wild pitch for a 4-1 score.

The Vipers got within one run at 4-3 in the bottom of the second as Caonabo Cosme singled and Rick Guarno collected his sixth home run of the season.

The Capitals regained their four run lead in the third frame as Young doubled, Carlos Duncan singled, and with two outs Aaron Hornostaj drilled a three-run shot for a 7-3 advantage.

In the top of the fourth inning Edmonton got another run when Cortes doubled, stole third base, and scored on a Okano sacrifice fly for a 8-3 lead.

Calgary made a game of it in the bottom of the seventh as Dillon O'Krane doubled, Fehlandt Lentini singled for a RBI, Castro picked up a base hit, Jorge Mejia doubled in another, and Castro scored on a passed ball for a 8-6 score.

Edmonton got a run back in the top of the eighth inning for a 9-6 advantage as Ehrnsberger doubled and scored on an Okano RBI infield single.

The Snakes rallied in the bottom of the eighth as Guarno smacked his second home run of the game, Drew Miller doubled, Ivan Reyes and Castro walked to load the bases, Mejia was hit by a pitch to get within one run, and Colin Moro drove in two with a two out single to give his team their first lead at 10-9.

Paint the Park Pink Weekend concludes on Sunday July 26th at 1:35 PM MDT with the Vipers again wearing special Pink Jerseys to be auctioned off during the game and handing out following the contest. Pink Bats and Pink Hats will be on sale and all proceeds raised will go to the Breast Cancer Supportive Care Foundation.

There will also be a "Show & Shine" where Classic Cars and Custom Motor Cycles will be in the parking lot from 10:00 AM MDT to 1:00 PM MDT.

Erik Dessau (6-1) takes to the bump for the matinee and is 3-0 in his last four starts.
