Tucson Toros Pitcher Rene Garcia Acquired by the Chicago White Sox
Published on July 25, 2009 under Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release
San Ramon, CA - The Golden Baseball League is pleased to announce that RHP Rene Garcia of the Tucson Toros has had his contract purchased by the Chicago White Sox. He joins teammate Andrew Romo as the second rookie pitcher off the Tucson squad to go to an MLB team this year. Undrafted after a great season at Lubbock Christian, the flamethrower had appeared in 8 games in relief for the Toros and struck out 16 in 14 innings pitched.
Garcia, a Tucson native, was drafted out of high school by the Colorado Rockies and also out of Community College two years in a row by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but elected to stay in school. He went 11-1 this year for NAIA Lubbock Christian leading his team to the NAIA National Championship Game. Surprisingly, he went undrafted and returned home and was immediately signed by the Toros in mid-June of this year. He has been a force out of the bullpen for Tucson and had his finest game in Long Beach last week, in front of a number of major league scouts, as he displayed a 95-mph fastball and struck out 7 batters in 3 and 2/3 innings in a 15-inning marathon win by the Toros.
Garcia is the 14th GBL player, and the third in the last 10 days, to be acquired by a Major League organization in 2009.
