Tucson Toros News Release

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Toros announced Saturday that the Chicago White Sox have purchased the contract of Righthanded Pitcher Rene Garcia. After signing with the club on June 19th, the 23-year old Tucson native excelled in his time with the Toros by striking out 16 batters in 14 1/3 innings with a 4.40 ERA. The hard throwing righty demonstrated his overpowering stuff in a dominant appearance against the Long Beach Armada in which his fanned seven in 3 2/3 innings, allowing the Toros to win 3-2 in 15 innings. Garcia is expected to report to the Bristol Sox of the Appalachian League.

Garcia's ties to Tucson baseball run deep as he played at Sunnyside High School and Pima Community College. Earlier this year he played at Lubbock Christian College where he helped LCC win the NAIA National Championship. Garcia went 11-1, in Lubbock, and two of his wins were in the World Series where he went 2-0.

Originally drafted out of high school in 2004 by the Colorado Rockies, Garcia went to South Mountain Community College before later returning to Tucson and Pima Community College. He was drafted in each of the next two years by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005 and 2006. "It has been a long, winding road, but I am excited about my chance to play for the White Sox," said Garcia. "The Toros were a good team to start my pro career with and now I am on to the next opportunity."

The Tucson Toros are in the midst of a seven game homestand at Hi Corbett Field and will take on the Victoria seals tonight at 7:00 p.m.
