Tucson Toros News Release
San Ramon, CA July 25, 2009: The Golden Baseball League announced today that the Tucson Toros have agreed to terms with major league veteran and all-star Junior Spivey. The ex-Diamondback star joined the Toros last night and deliverd the game-winning hit in a comeback victory at home over the Victoria Seals.
Spivey, 34, 6-0, 185, was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks out of Cowley College in the 36th round in 1996. He spent eight seasons with Arizona reaching the major leagues in 2001 as part of the Diamondbacks World Series Championship squad. In 2002 he was named a National League All-Star and finished 14th in the MVP voting as he hit over .300 and scored over 100 runs. He was traded to Milwaukee but injuries plagued him for the next few years and knocked him out of baseball after the 2007 season after a 12-year pro career with five of those in the big leagues. Now healthy and ready to return, Spivey is well-known in Tucson and a fan favorite since he played parts of three seasons there for the Diamondbacks AAA affiliate.
Spivey is the 6th major league all-star to play in the Golden Baseball League. Fellow all-stars include Rickey Henderson, Jose Lima, Jose Canseco, Felix Jose, and Robert Fick.
