Peoria Rivermen News Release
After registering trailing 3-0 through the first two periods of play, the Peoria Rivermen struck three times in a 3:08 stretch to even the score but dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Charlotte Checkers at Time Warner Cable Arena on Saturday night.
Tyler Shattock assisted on two of the Rivermen goals while Jake Allen made some timely saves and finished with 31 in the game.
Peoria (0-2-0-1) is still in search of their first win of the season and will rematch with the Checkers on Sunday at 2 p.m. CDT.
It only took Nicholas Blanchard 1:37 to open the scoring as he beat Jake Allen from the side of the goal. Jon Matsumoto lost the puck behind the goal and Blanchard picked it up, walked in front and backhanded it through Allen's legs. Jerome Samson knuckled a slap shot over the glove of Allen at 7:15 to expand the Checker's lead to 2-0.
In the second, the Checkers outshot the Rivermen 15-1 but only scored one goal, with 1:36 left in the frame. Zach Boychuck burned around the outside of the zone and cut through the crease before he backhanded home his second of the season to give the Checkers a 3-0 lead.
The Rivermen rally began at 3:39 of the third and a great effort by Shattock. He hustled a defender to the puck and when he was tripped, through a pass from his knees to Phil McRae at the side of the net. It was the first point of the season for both Shattock and McRae.
Stefan Della Rovere put the Rivermen within one at 5:17 with his team-leading second of the year. He stripped a Checker at center ice and then wristed a shot over the glove of Justin Peters for an unassisted tally.
It was exactly 90 seconds that Peoria evened the score at 3-3. Brett Sonne forced the puck behind the net for Shattock who again made a great feed to Anthony Peluso in the slot. He delayed before he fired the puck into the net for his first of the season.
Neither team scored in overtime and the Rivermen missed two chances in the shootout to win it before falling 2-1 in a seven-round tiebreaker.
The Rivermen were outshot 35-25 in the game and were a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. They went 0-for-2 on the power play.
The Rivermen and Checkers will face each other again on Sunday. The game will start at 2 p.m. CDT and can be heard locally on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
