Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, Maine - Ray Kaunisto, Jake Muzzin and David Meckler each contributed a goal and an assist as the Manchester Monarchs rolled to a 5-1 victory over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 5,411 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Brandon Kozun and Andrei Loktionov rounded out the scoring effort for Manchester as 12 different skaters found the scoring sheet for a Monarchs team who has scored 12 times in the past two games combined while running their record to 3-1-0-0.
Colin Long was the lone Pirate to tally in the final box score as Portland fell to 1-1-0-0 on the season.
Meckler began the Manchester offensive onslaught with his third goal of the season, and second in as many nights, with 4:23 remaining in the first period. A clear forecast of the events for the rest of the night, Loktionov found the back of the net on a deflected shot, exactly 46 seconds later to send the Monarchs into the first intermission with a two-goal advantage. Muzzin followed suit with his first goal of the season, seven minutes into the second period before Long gave Portland a glimmer of hope nearly three minutes later on a tap-in goal in the crease. Late in the third period, Manchester put the game out of reach with goals from Kaunisto and Kozun to send the visitors to their second straight road victory.
Both teams tallied 33 shots on net in the game as Martin Jones posted the victory in net for Manchester with 32 saves, running his record to 3-1-0-0. Portland goaltender Curtis McElhinney turned away 28 shots as he dropped to 1-1-0-0 on the season.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from the Monarchs: 1. Kaunisto; 2. Jones and 3. Meckler.
The Pirates will have a quick turnaround, hitting the road tomorrow (Sunday) for a showdown with the Providence Bruins at 4:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on the Portland Pirates Radio Network, 95.9 WPEI and 95.5 WPPI, with the pregame show starting at 3:45 p.m.
Following Sunday's game against Providence, the Pirates will open up a three-game homestand, beginning on Wednesday, October 19 against Manchester at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday will feature a special "Chamber Night" as the Pirates will be recognizing those who are involved with the Portland Regional Chamber in their First Annual Membership Appreciation Night. The homestand will continue on Friday when the Adirondack Phantoms come to town for a 7 p.m. faceoff. Fans are encouraged to join the Pirates as they host Cystic Fibrosis Night to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as the first of nine Friday "Dollar Desert Dogs" nights where hot dogs can be purchased for a single dollar at any of the Civic Center concession locations on the concourse from an hour before faceoff until 10 minutes after the second period begins. The fourth annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game, sponsored by Maine Medical Center, will follow on Saturday, October 22 against Providence.
