Late Blast from Jackson Not Enough

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Nic Jackson hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning in Sioux City on Saturday night. Sadly, for the Fish, it was way too little, way too late.
Jackson hit his team-leading third big fly of the season with Casey Haerther on first and nobody out in the top of the ninth, but it was hardly enough as the Sioux City Explorers started early and defeated the Goldeyes 6-2.
Sioux City scored two in the first and one more in the fifth off Goldeyes starter Coby Cowgill, then added three in the seventh off Cowgill and Goldeyes reliever Brendan Lafferty as the Explorers (16-6) won the final two games of this three-game series, sent the Goldeyes home with a 3-3 record on their six-game road trip and a 9-13 record on the season. The Goldeyes are now 10 games behind first-place St. Paul in the American Association's North Division.
Once again the Goldeyes just couldn't muster much offense. With Haerther's ninth-inning single and Jackson's home run, the Fish managed only two runs on a total of six hits. Sioux City scored six runs on 12 hits off Cowgill and three relievers.
Veteran catcher, Luis Alen had one hit in the game, a double, and now has 127 doubles in his Goldeyes career. He needs only three more to surpass Fehlandt Lentini for the Goldeyes career record in doubles. No Goldeye had a multi-hit game on Saturday night.
Sioux City starter RHP John Straka (2-1, 3.52 ERA), who went eight-plus innings, picked up the win while Cowgill (0-1, 5.06 ERA), who gave up four runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings, was tagged with the loss.
The Goldeyes will have a rare Sunday off and then welcome the powerful, first-place St. Paul Saints to Shaw Park for the first-game of a three-game series on Monday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
Tickets for the upcoming series with the Saints and all Goldeyes games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
