SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries struggled out of the gate, giving up nine runs in the first three innings, and fell to the St. Paul Saints by the final score of 9-3 on Saturday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Starting pitcher Brett Gerritse (0-5, 7.89 ERA) suffered the loss for the Birds', giving up seven runs on 10 hits over 1 1/3 innings, his shortest start of the season.
The bullpen came in did a good job in relief for the Canaries, with Josh Ferrell posting his longest outing of the season. The southpaw tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out a season high five batters. Nathan Stewart and Tyler Pearson each threw a scoreless inning of work.
Canaries catcher, Richard Stock extended his hitting streak to 15 games, after going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI's. Jason Repko also had a good day for the Birds', finishing the evening 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Saints starting pitcher, Robert Coe (3-0, 1.69 ERA) picked up his third win of the season, holding the Canaries to just two runs on seven hits, while striking out six batters.
St. Paul takes a 2-1 series advantage over the Canaries heading into the final game of the series on Sunday, with RHP Shawn Blackwell (1-3, 2.73 ERA) taking the ball for the Birds' against Saints RHP Jeff Shields (4-0, 2.88 ERA).
Gates open at 3:00 PM on Sunday, for Family Fun-Day at the Birdcage! The first 500 kids at the ballpark will receive a free replica baseball bat courtesy of Schoeneman's! It will also be Bark in the Park day at the Birdcage. Fans are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends out to Sioux Falls stadium for an afternoon of fun in the sun. Dog tickets are just $5, with all proceeds benefitting the local animal shelters in the surrounding community.
