Hartford, Conn. - The Somerset Patriots (64-44) took Tuesday night's series opener over Hartford Yard Goats (37-70) with a 4-1 win at Dunkin' Donuts Park.

Playing as the home team, Somerset fell behind on a Matt McLaughlin (3) solo home run in the bottom of the third inning, but that was all of the offense for Hartford on the night. Somerset starting pitcher Ken Waldichuk struck out nine over five strong innings to limit the damage.

The Patriots initially tied the game when Jesus Bastidas raced home from third base and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third. Three innings later, Michael Beltre (15) launched a two-out, two-run home run to left field to put Somerset ahead 3-1.

Brandon Lockridge added an RBI single in the seventh for an insurance run.

The Patriots bullpen tossed four scoreless innings on the night, led by two shutout frames from Sean Boyle (W, 1-0) to earn the win and a clean ninth inning from Barrett Loseke (S, 2) to clinch the save.

Hartford starter Matt Dennis (4-9) allowed four runs over 6.2 innings to take the loss.

The Patriots are still 1.5 games up on the Baysox for the second playoff spot in the Double-A Northeast League with 11 games left in the regular season.

Somerset and Hartford continue their six-game series Wednesday night. First pitch at Dunkin' Donuts Park is set for 6:05 pm.
