Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The combination of Joelvis Del Rosario and Pedro Santos on the mound for Lansing held the Kernels' offensive to just one run on three hits Sunday afternoon as the Lugnuts takes the series finale from Cedar Rapids 2-1.
After a quiet offensive game on Saturday, both offensives came out sluggish in a rain-delayed start of Sunday. Cory Lewis made his eighth appearance for Cedar Rapids on the mound and was excellent through the first five innings, allowing no runs on just one hit with five strikeouts. But, in the sixth inning, Lansing hopped on the board first. A Junior Pérez bunt single led off the frame, then a ground out moved him to second base. A batter later, he came home to score on a Danny Baustia RBI single to give Lansing the lead.
Lewis finished the day going 6.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts in a losing effort.
His counterpart, Joelvis Del Rosario, was just as good on the mound for Lansing. The right-hander kept the Kernels' bats at bay for six scoreless innings allowing just a walk and two hits while picking up nine strikeouts, earning his second win of the season.
With Lewis out of the game in the top of the seventh inning, the Lugnuts doubled the lead. After a walk and single began the inning, a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third for CJ Rodriguez. The Catcher then produced a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a 2-0 Lansing lead, the tally after seven.
In the eighth, Noah Miller snapped the Lansing shutout effort. With the bases empty and two out, Miller crunched a solo home run over the wall in right field to cut the Lansing lead in half at 2-1.
But that would be the closest the Kernels got. Pedro Santos tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete the nine-out save for Lansing as the Lugnuts took the series finale over the Kernels 2-1.
The loss for the Kernels (63-39) snaps the team's season-long ten-game home winning streak, as Lansing (45-56) leaves Cedar Rapids with their lone win in the set coming in the series finale. Cedar Rapids is back on the road next week, opening up a six-game series at Quad Cities Tuesday at 6:30.
