Lannan, Paul Lead Chiefs to Win

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, used stellar pitching from John Lannan to top their Thruway Series rival, the Rochester Red Wings, 8-2 on Friday night. Lannan worked eight efficient innings for Syracuse, scattering eight hits and two runs.

While Lannan was dealing, the Chiefs were rolling on offense as well. Syracuse (14-21) got to Rochester starter Jeff Manship from the opening pitch. Corey Brown doubled to right field to lead off the bottom of the first and Jarrett Hoffpauir followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. After a Mark Teahen strikeout, Xavier Paul continued his torrid pace. He blasted his second three-run homer in as many nights off the light tower in right field to put the Chiefs up 3-0.

Rochester (14-20) scored one of its two runs off Lannan in the fourth inning. Matt Carson, who doubled to start the inning, scored on a ground ball by Rene Rivera.

Paul was the cog in the Chiefs' offensive engine again in the bottom of the fourth. He tripled to lead off the inning and came home on a sacrifice fly from Carlos Rivero to make it 4-1 Chiefs.

The Chiefs bounced Manship from the game in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles from Josh Johnson and Brown to start the frame. Reliever Esmerling Vasquez didn't fare much better. Teahen drilled a one-out single to right field that scored Johnson. Paul followed with an RBI single, his third hit of the night, that knocked in Hoffpauir to give the Chiefs a 6-1 lead. After a walk to Rivero and a lineout by Jim Negrych, Brett Carroll walked with the bases loaded. That brought in Teahen for the third and final Syracuse run of the inning.

The Red Wings got their final run of the game off Lannan in the seventh when Joe Thurston scored on an infield single by Ben Revere.

The Chiefs tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth. Carroll scored on a single from Hoffpauir for the game's final run.

After Lannan twirled eight frames for Syracuse, Erik Arnesen pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the deal for the Chiefs.

Syracuse and Rochester meet again on Saturday afternoon at 2:00. Soldiers from Fort Drum will be honored before the game on Armed Forces Day at Alliance Bank Stadium. Left-hander Zach Duke is scheduled to pitch for Syracuse. Rochester is set to counter with righty Daryl Thompson.
