Idaho Steelheads News Release
Rapid City, SD - Goaltender Marek Langhamer made 45 saves and Cody Ferriero netted two power play goals to push the Rapid City Rush (8-5-1-1) past the Idaho Steelheads (5-9-4), 4-1 at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
The Steelheads opened the scoring at 8:06 of the first period when Colton Beck's centering pass from the left wing corner deflected off Rush defenseman Brett Kostolansky and past Langhamer for his ninth goal of the season and a 1-0 Idaho lead. Zack Kamrass earned an assist for his seventh point in nine games, while Shawn Boutin earned his second assist of the season on the play.
Beck's goal was the 16th consecutive Steelheads tally on which Beck, Taylor Peters, or Rob Linsmayer has earned a point.
The Steelheads lead was short-lived as Ferriero scored his first power play goal of the game just 2:29 later from the high slot. Ferriero would add another power play tally at 17:43 of the second, dancing through the Steelheads defense and walking in alone on Idaho goaltender Maxime Lagace to make it 4-1 Rapid City.
The Rush man-advantage came into play with the 27th ranked power play in the ECHL, with their 38 power plays on the season the third-fewest in the league. Tonight they went 2-for-5 on the power play against the Steelheads, with Ferriero a fixture in his fourth game back from injury.
Tied 1-1 entering the second period, the Steelheads fell behind at 5:57 when Destry Straight shorthanded backhander off a 2-on-2 rush eluded Lagace, the Steelheads second shorthanded goal against in three games. Exactly 5:30 later, Chris Ciotti's second goal of the game made it a 3-1 score.
The Steelheads have registered 45 shots or more twice now this season and lost both times. They launched 48 shots at Utah's Ryan Faragher earlier this season in a 4-1 loss on October 30th. Tonight they outshot the Rush 19-1 in the third but could not break through Langhamer.
The Steelheads and Rush will play the second game of their series on Friday night with puck-drop scheduled for 7:05 pm MT. The broadcast can be heard on 93.1FM KTIK, but will be joined in progress shortly after puck-drop.

Play of the Game:
After Straight's shorthanded goal put the Rush on top, the Steelheads needed to get right back on the offensive against Langhamer, who was having a strong game. But the Steelheads found themselves pinned in their own zone for another defensive zone shift just five minutes later, when the pressure led to key defensive zone turnovers. After several failed clearing attempts, Spencer Pommells collected the puck at the top of the left circle and slid the puck down low through the Idaho defense to Ciotti, who walked in alone with plenty of time to beat Lagace. After the unfortunate shorthanded goal, a defensive breakdown shift to double the deficit gave the Steelheads a steep hill to climb.
