November 26, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
Ft. Wayne, IN- The Cincinnati Cyclones (10-3-2-1) collected a 5-1 win over the Fort Wayne Komets on Thursday night. Forwards Jack Downing, Christiaan Minella, Zach Budish, Peter Quenneville, and Nick Huard netted the goals for the Cyclones, who avenged their 3-2 overtime loss to the Komets from Wednesday.
It did not take long for the Komets to take a 1-0 lead, as forward Mike Embach scored a power play marker, 5:51 into the opening period.
The Cyclones soon found some special teams magic of their own, when Downing took a pass from forward Joe Pendenza while on a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush, and fired a shot that was initially stopped by Komets netminder Spencer Martin, but the rebound was deflected into the net by a Komet defenseman, tying the game, 1-1, after 20 minutes of play.
Cincinnati took a 2-1 lead with just over six minutes left in the second period, when Minella came down the right wing and wristed a shot past Martin, for his fourth goal of the season.
The Cyclones' 2-1 lead held up throughout the remainder of the second, and in the third, the Cyclones' offense continued to fire on all cylinders, when Budish took a Joe Wilson pass and fired a wrister from the right circle past Martin, giving Cincinnati a 3-1 lead, 3:05 into the frame.
That lead became 4-1, four minutes later, when forward Branden Gracel sent a pass to Quenneville who launched a one-timer that beat Martin, for his second goal of the season.
The Cyclones wrapped up the big road win with six minutes left while on the power play, when a point shot from defenseman Steve Weinstein was tipped into the net by Huard, giving the Cyclones a 5-1 lead and the eventual win.
The Cyclones were outshot, 34-21, on the night, while the power play converted on one of its three chances. Cyclones goaltender Brandon Whitney was big in net for Cincinnati, stopping 33 of the 34 shots he faced to collect the win. The Cyclones wrap up their two-game road trip on Saturday against the Quad City Mallards. Faceoff is slated for 8:05pm ET.
