Lancaster Stormers News Release

For seven innings on Sunday afternoon, the Lancaster Barnstormers hitters were thwarted.

In the eighth, they busted loose.

Lancaster rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth to defeat the Long Island Ducks, 4-3, in the rubber game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Ashur Tolliver (0-2) was summoned as Long Island's third pitcher of the day. He walked Darian Sandford, who stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Blake Gailen broke up the shutout with a single into right. Ryan Casteel followed with a single to center, putting the tying runs on base. Tolliver retired K.C. Hobson on a pop up for the first out, but, following a passed ball, walked Trayvon Robinson to load the bases.

With right-handed hitting Nate Coronado scheduled, Long Island went to righty setup man Dennis O'Grady. Coronado won the battle, launching a two-run double over the head of center fielder Daniel Fields to tie the game. The Ducks walked Vladimir Frias intentionally to refill the bags. With Anderson De La Rosa at the plate, a pitch from O'Grady eluded young backup catcher Keith Ezersky, enabling Robinson to score the lead run.

Long Island put together a threat of its own in the bottom of the eighth. Cody Puckett singled off Garrett Granitz to start the inning. The right-handed submarine thrower walked Anthony Vega on four pitches. The Ducks opted not to bunt with their number nine hitter, Dan Lyons, who, instead flied out to right, getting pinch runner Taylor Ard to third.

John Anderson was called from the bullpen to face Jordany Valdespin. Anderson coaxed a hopper to the second base bag. Shortstop Vladimir Frias took the hop, stepped on the bag and fired to first to complete the double play.

Matt Reynolds took it from there, working past a leadoff single by Lew Ford in the ninth for his 12th save.

Long Island had taken a 3-0 lead off Jonathan Albaladejo in the third. Valdespin singled, stole second and came home on a double just inside the right field line by Travis Snider. David Washington walked with Snider taking third on a ball four wild pitch. Starting catcher Ramon Cabrera doubled home both runs before leaving the game with an injury.

Albaladejo worked through the sixth. Matt Marksberry (1-1) threw a scoreless seventh to earn the win.

The Barnstormers open a three-game series against Somerset on Monday evening. Lefty Nate Reed (5-1) will take the hill for the Barnstormers against right-hander Kyle Davies. Fans may tune into Blue Ridge Cable 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting at 7:00.

NOTES: The Barnstormers tied a franchise record with seven stolen bases...Sandford and Frias swiped three apiece...Sandford now has 31 for the year and 76 as a Barnstormer, moving him into third place all-time...Gailen's single in the eighth extended his RBI streak to eight games, one shy of the club record...Coronado's double was only Lancaster's second hit with the bases loaded since the end of the 12-game winning streak on May 23.
