Lancaster Stormers News Release
Since the retirement of Matt Reynolds on Saturday, the Lancaster Barnstormers have been having some trouble locking up wins. That is, until Thursday night.
Brazoban pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to wrap up a 9-8 Barnstormers victory over the Long Island Ducks at Bethpage Ballpark. It was the seventh one-run game between the two clubs this season over 10 meetings at the Ducks' home.
Lancaster got RBI singles from Vladimir Frias and Rico Noel off Hector Silvestre (2-1) in the second inning, but their big frame was the fourth. With two outs, Darian Sandford and Tyler Bortnick drew walks. The duo executed a double steal to move one bag closer. Blake Gailen's grounder to first was mishandled by David Washington, and both runners scored. Trayvon Robinson followed with a single, and Ryan Casteel drove home both with a double down the right field line.
The speed of the 'Stormers came into play again in the sixth. Bortnick walked and raced to third on a single up the middle by Gailen. Gailen took off for second, leading Dioner Navarro to throw through. The ball was relayed back home, too late to get Bortnick as Lancaster put its seventh run on the board. Casteel followed with a two-run homer to left center for the 9-2 advantage.
John Anderson (5-2) labored over his five innings but kept the Ducks from striking in any significant way. The lefty used 106 pitches, allowing five hits and four walks. He also struck out four.
Long Island roared back in the sixth, stringing together five straight one-out singles off Garrett Granitz, producing four runs. Jared Lakind struck out Washington to end the inning and pitched a scoreless seventh.
Taylor Ard belted a two-out, two-run homer off Luke Westphal with two outs in the eighth, drawing Long Island even closer. Washington flied out to deep left to end the eighth, setting up Brazoban for the save opportunity.
The Barnstormers take on the Sugar Land Skeeters on Friday evening. Joe Gardner (5-9) will make the start for Lancaster against the Skeeters' Yasutomo Kubo (3-1). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting at 7:45 EDT.
