Lancaster Stormers News Release

If baseball innings only had two outs, Lancaster would have walked away with an easy win on Friday evening.

That third out, however, proved elusive as Bridgeport scored nine two-out runs en route to a 9-2 win over the Barnstormers in the opener of a three-game series at Harbor Yard.

With the loss and a York win over Camden, the Barnstormers edge in the Freedom Division has been knocked back to one game with nine remaining on the schedule.

Angel Flores singled to center with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the second as Lancaster grabbed a quick 1-0 lead off Pat Ryan (3-4). That would be the last ball to leave the infield untouched off Ryan, who held Lancaster to six singles and that lone run in seven innings of work. He walked three and struck out six.

The Barnstormers' other run came on a leadoff homer by Ozzie Chavez off reliever Will Cunnane in the eighth.

Meanwhile, John Halama (1-2) got off to a fine start, collecting five outs after five batters. Brock Peterson ruined that stretch with a two-out single into left in the second inning. He advanced on a passed ball and scored when Danny Putnam rolled a single into center to tie the game.

Halama retired the first two Bluefish in the third inning, but the third would not come for a while. Angel Chavez singled to right center and moved to second on a walk to Luis Lopez. Wes Bankston launched a ground rule double into the right field corner for a 2-1 lead. Steve Moss brought the next two over with a single flared into center as the Bluefish sailed to a 4-1 advantage.

Bridgeport put the game away in the sixth. Halama allowed a pair of singles by Moss and Peterson to start, but had the Bluefish at two outs with runners at second and third. Angel Berroa broke the game open at that point with a two-run double into the left field corner. Halama walked Adam Greenberg before leaving the game.

Lee Tabor came on and was uncharacteristically wild. Three walks, a bad hop single and a wild pitch later, and the Bluefish were up, 9-1 and out of reach.

The series continues on Saturday evening at 7:05. Matt Smith (1-3) will go for the Bluefish against former Phillies right-hander J.D. Durbin (0-1). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed on sportsjuice.com.
