Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - Southern Maryland got 16 strikeouts from three pitchers, including 11 from starter Eddie Rodriguez, in a 6-1 win over the
Road Warriors on Friday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. Rodriguez's 11 strikeouts were the most from a single Blue Crabs pitcher this
season.
For the sixth time in seven meetings the Road Warriors began the scoring on an RBI groundout from right fielder Michael Mooney in the
first inning to give the Road Warriors a 1-0 lead.
That lead would be short-lived however, as Southern Maryland put two runs on the board in the first inning on RBI singles from leftfielder
Casey Benjamin and third baseman Kody Kirkland top give the Blue Crabs a 2-1 advantage.
Southern Maryland added two more runs in the fifth as second baseman Brandon Pinckney (3) blasted a two-run homer over the leftfield
wall to push the Blue Crabs' lead to 4-1. They added two more runs in the seventh as Pinckney picked up another RBI on a single and
Benjamin hit a sac fly to make the final 6-1.
The Blue Crabs had only five hits, but two of them came from Pinckney who went 2-3 with a homer and two RBI. He also scored two runs.
Benjamin chipped in with a 1-2 effort and two RBI and a run scored.
The Road Warriors had three hitters with two hits as they outhit the Blue Crabs 7-5. Centerfielder Jonel Pacheco went 2-4 with a run
scored, while designated hitter Luis Nieblas and shortstop Danny Gonzalez contributed two hits as well.
But the story of the night was the work of Rodriguez (2-1) who struck out 11 in only seven inning of work in picking up the win. He allowed
six hits and one run while walking none as well. The loss went to starter Jusef Frias (3-3) who allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits, while walking four and striking out one in five innings of work.
The Blue Crabs will take on the Road Warriors in game two of their three-game series on Saturday at 6:35. The Blue Crabs will send righty Virgil Vasquez (3-4, 4.97 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Jason Norderum (1-1, 4.50 ERA) for the Road Warriors. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
