Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A quick start and dominant pitching Thursday got the Birmingham Barons (11-16) back in the win column with a 4-2 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts at Regions Field.

The Barons, who had been starving for runs after being shutout on Wednesday, got off to a quick start with four runs on four hits in the first three innings.

Leading off the second, Barons catcher Yermin Mercedes blasted his third homer of the season off the scoreboard in left for an early 1-0 lead.

Mercedes would add on in the third, flying out on a near grand slam to left but bringing home Luis Robert for a sacrifice fly. For Robert, it was his first run scored as a Baron.

Barons first baseman Gavin Sheets doubled the Barons lead to 4-0 in the third with a two-RBI double to score Luis Basabe and Luis Gonzalez. With the hit, Sheets snapped a 0-for-18 streak at the plate dating back to April 26 against Montgomery.

Barons starter Jimmy Lambert was dealing. He posted his third quality start of the season in six innings and allowed just two earned runs. His curveball was in full effect, striking out six Lookout batters. Lambert moved to 3-1 on the season with the win and lowered his ERA to 2.94.

The bullpen did a solid job denying a late Chattanooga comeback. New Baron Zack Burdi earned a hold in one shutout inning in relief of Lambert before Hunter Schryver locked down a two-inning save to end the game.

Chattanooga got their only two runs in the fifth. Jose Siri doubled to center field to score Mitch Nay and advanced to third on the throw back to the infield. Taylor Trammell then brought Siri home on a sacrifice fly to center to cut it to 4-2.

The ----four runs for Birmingham were their most since Sunday, when they scored seven against the Biscuits.

After Thursday's game, Mercedes is now batting .407 with three homers. Mercedes has now hit in 15 of 16 games this season and has reached base safely in 16 of his 17 games played.

The Barons will pick back up their series with Chattanooga at 7:05 p.m. on Monday from Riverwalk Stadium. Left-hander Kodi Medeiros (0-3, 6.39 ERA) will get the start for the Barons and make his fourth start of the season.

WJOX-AM 690 will be the home of the Barons on Friday. Fans can tune into the Coca-Cola Pregame Show starting at 6:50 p.m.

The Birmingham Barons are the proud Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The Barons will open the home portion of their 2019 season, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Michael Jordan's lone year in baseball, against the Tennessee Smokies at 7:05 p.m. April 10 at Regions Field.
