Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws lost their 5th consecutive game on Tuesday night as they fell 6-5 to the Delmarva Shorebirds. It was the 1st game of the 3 game series, and the 1st game of a 7 game road trip for Lakewood as the BlueClaws dropped yet another close game. After 4 crushing losses at home to the Hagerstown Suns, Lakewood was trying to get back in the win column with their Ace RHP David Buchanan on the mound. Unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be Tuesday night.

Buchanan came into the game off 2 fantastic starts for Lakewood. Two starts ago for Buchanan he threw a 9-inning complete game in which he allowed just 1 run, and then for an encore he went 7 innings of 1 hit shutout baseball in his last start. Tuesday night Buchanan lasted just 3 1/3rd innings as he gave up 5 runs on 9 hits and a very uncharacteristic 5 walks. Ty Kelly was 5-5 with a HR in the ballgame and Michael Flacco was 4-4 with 2 doubles and a walk for the Shorebirds. Lakewood actually stormed back after trailing 5-0 to make it 5-4 with a 4 run top half of the 6th inning, but they couldn't get over the hump as they fell by 1 run 6-5. Delmarva scored an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th to make it 6-4, and that run ended up being the game winning run.

The BlueClaws made it 6-5 with 1 out in the top of the 9th on Anthony Hewitt's RBI single, and the speedy Zach Collier was at 3B for 1B Jim Murphy. Murphy struck out swinging, and then OF Michael Dabbs grounded out to 1B to end the game. Dabbs RP Jacob Borup each made their 2011 debut for Lakewood, and they each played well. Dabbs played with Lakewood in 2010 and was 2-5 with 2 doubles on Tuesday. Borup made his BlueClaws debut and threw 2 innings allowing 5 hits, and 1 run while striking out 2. Zach Collier was 1-5 to extend his hitting streak to 9 games. The 5th straight loss for Lakewood marks the 1st time since they lost 6 straight from 5/12-5/17/2008 that the BlueClaws have lost at least 5 straight games. Jacob Pettit remains perfect on the year for Delmarva as he gets the win and advances to 4-0. David Walters collected his 11th save of 2011.

Wednesday night the BlueClaws (16-22) will send out LHP Jesse Biddle (1-5, 5.57 ERA) to try and stop their skid. Delmarva (23-16) will answer with RHP Scott Copeland (3-0, 3.67 ERA). First Pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
