
Shorebirds Slip Past BlueClaws 6-5 in Game One

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (23-16) built an early lead on hung on late to defeat the Lakewood BlueClaws 6-5 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Tuesday night. Jonathan Schoop extend his hitting streak to 16 games and Clay Schrader extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 13.
The Shorebirds jumped on Lakewood starter David Buchanan, who came into the outing with the top ERA in the South Atlantic League. Schoop reached on a fielder's choice groundout. With two outs, Mike Flacco hit a double down the left field line to advance Schoop to third. Then, Adam Gaylord singled to plate Schoop and Flacco. With Gaylord at second, Dudley Leonora hit a slow tapper to third and Gaylord turned third and came home on a wild throw by first baseman J.R. Murphy.
The Shorebirds took a 4-0 lead in the second on a single by Ty Kelly to score Brenden Webb. In the fourth, Kelly connected on his first home run of the season to lift the 'Birds to a 5-0 lead.
The BlueClaws came to life in the sixth inning. Murphy and Michael Dabbs hit back-to-back doubles to trim the deficit to 5-1. Domingo Santana then singled to advance Dabbs to third. Alan Schoenberger followed with a sacrifice fly to center field. After a double by Cameron Rupp, Edgar Dunn hit a two-run single to pull within 5-4.
The Shorebirds added a critical insurance run in the eighth inning. With two outs, Mike Flacco and Michael Ohlman hit back-to-back singles. Then, Gaylord drew a walk to load the bases. Leonora was then hit by a pitch to force in Flacco to give the Shorebirds a 6-5 lead.
The BlueClaws scored one in the ninth inning but left the tying run in the third base as David Walters locked up his 11th save of the season.
Clay Schrader struck out four batters in two relief innings prior to Walters entering in the ninth. Schrader has not allowed a run in six straight relief appearances.
Shorebirds starter Jacob Pettit earned his staff high fourth win of the season in six innings. He allowed eight hits and four runs.
Kelly and Flacco each had perfect days at the plate. Kelly went 5-for-5 while Flacco went 4-for-4. The Shorebirds accumulated 17 hits.
The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play game two of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
