GREENSBORO - Saturday wasn't exactly the homecoming Greensboro was looking for after being on the road for eight days.
Starter Bryan Evans gave up six runs in just one-third of an innings work on the night and reliever Chris Bodishbaugh gave up another half dozen before the game even reached the third inning as the BlueClaws smashed the Hoppers 14-5.
Greensboro did eventually get on the scoreboard and out-scored Lakewood 5-2 through the final seven innings of the contest.
The Hoppers plated their first run of the game in the fourth inning after Mike Stanton, Matt Dominguez and Ryan Curry collected back-to-back-to-back one-out hits.
Stanton added to Greensboro's run total in the sixth inning with his league-leading 28th home run of the season. His two-run blast drove in Hunter Mense after he reached on a strikeout-wild pitch by BlueClaws' starter Chance Chapman. Emilio Ontiveros drove in the innings other run with a two-out double.
Greensboro's pitching staff settled into a grove late in the game as Corey Madden and A.J. Battisto struck out seven of the final 10 Lakewood batters while allowing just one hit. Madden retired all six batters he faced. His only non-strikeout, out recorded was a four pop fly that was caught by Mense on the first base side.
Not only were the BlueClaws bats on fire Saturday as they pounded out 17 hits, but prior to arriving in Greensboro, Lakewood spent several hours on the side of the interstate in Delaware after their bus caught fire. The BlueClaws arrived at NewBridge Bank Park over seven hours after they were slated to pull in and walked away with the nine-run victory.
With the loss, Greensboro dropped its seventh consecutive Saturday contest and fell to 0-10 in Saturday games at home.
The same two teams will square off again Sunday as the Hoppers look for better results when they send RHP Alex Sanabia (4-3, 4.62) to the mound to face RHP Vance Worley (1-0, 2.10) beginning at 7:00 p.m.
