Hagerstown Suns News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Three runs of offense were not enough to overcome three errors as the Hagerstown Suns (19-23) fell to the Kannapolis Intimidators (18-24) 8-3 on Saturday.
Hagerstown scored first as Valerio Heredia reached on a fielding error by first baseman Mark Fleisher to lead off the game. One batter later Tim Pahuta hit an RBI single off Kannapolis starter Johnnie Lowe (4-6) to take a 1-0 lead.
Cole Kimball (4-7) took the mound for the Suns but had trouble in the first inning. Brent Morel hit a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Morel then scored on an error by Pahuta as he attempted to throw out Jim Gallagher.
After a Fleisher single, Christian Marreo hit a triple to clear the bases and the Suns found themselves down 3-1 after the first frame.
Kimball hit Nick Mahin to lead off the bottom of the second and was brought home by Sergio Miranda with a RBI single, extending the Kannapolis lead.
Two more Intimidator runs followed in the third inning as Marreo hit his seventh homerun of the season and Sergio Morales scored off of an RBI single by John Curtis.
Kimball went four innings and gave up six runs, five of them earned, on nine hits. The right-hander took the loss for Hagerstown.
The Suns scored cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth off Lowe. Travis Reagan smacked a single to left field and Suns newcomer Bryan Miller reached on an error, before Mark Gildea drove both runners home on a single to right field to bring the Suns within three runs.
Lowe, who picked up the win, retired Hagerstown in order the sixth inning, bringing his final line to three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out three batters Chris Lugo and Jamie Lehman each pitched two innings in relief for Hagerstown and allowed one run to score. Gallagher had a RBI single off of Lugo in the sixth and Miranda connected an RBI single off Lehman in the seventh, bringing the final score to 8-3.
Kannapolis reliever Charlis Burdie finished off the Suns with three innings of scoreless work to pick up his first save of the season.
Game two of the four game set will take place on Sunday, August 3rd at 5:05 p.m.
