AVON, Ohio. -- The Lake Erie Crushers scored 11 times and pounded out a dozen hits at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday evening, as they won their 2014 season opener convincingly, 11-3, over the Schaumburg Boomers.

The victory for the Crushers (1-0) marked the first time in four years that they've won their home opener, while for the Boomers (0-1) the loss was just their second in three years at All Pro Freight Stadium.

The Crushers scored multiple runs in three innings, and five players hit safely multiple times. The scoring started in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Seth Granger won an eight pitch battle against Schaumburg's Cal Bowling (0-1) with a two-run single to left center field.

Lake Erie added another run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-0 advantage. Craig Hertler began the inning with a base hit, and scored all the way from first base on a two-out double to the gap in left center off the bat of Vincent Mejia.

Schaumburg battled back, and eventually tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. The Boomers scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, on run scoring infield singles from Mike Valadez and Sean Mahley. In the fifth, Justin Vazquez scored on shortstop Juan Sanchez's errant relay throw to first on a potential inning ending double play.

Lake Erie responded immediately, regaining the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. The inning began with Trevor Stevens's triple down the right field line, and he scored the go ahead run moments later on Hertler's groundout.

The Crushers sent nine batters to the plate and scored four times on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away. Sanchez delivered the first big hit of the inning, on a bases loaded single to center which plated a pair of runs. Stevens drove in the second run of the inning a double, and Anderson Hidalgo reached on a fielder's choice which brought Sanchez home.

Three more came across for the Crushers in the eighth inning, as they sent all nine to the plate for the second time in the contest. Kevin Berard and Hidalgo reached on fielder's choices to score runs, and Hertler scored a run on a wild pitch.

Mickey Jannis (1-0) scored the victory for the Crushers. He went five innings, and allowed three runs, two earned on four hits while fanning eight along the way. Bowling took the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits over five innings of work. Brad Duffy, Jose Rosario, Brandon Smith and Zac Treece all tossed scoreless innings in relief for the Crushers.

Stevens, Hertler, Granger, Sanchez and Emmanuel Quiles led the charge for the Crushers offensively with two hits each. The Lake Erie table setters, Stevens and Hertler combined to reach 7 times in 10 plate appearances. Stevens went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and drove one in, while Hertler went 2-for-4 while scoring twice and had a RBI as well.

The Crushers and Boomers will continue their three game series on Saturday, May 17, at All Pro Freight Stadium. Left-hander Connor Whalen (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Crushers, and the Boomers will counter with right-hander Charle Rosario (0-0, 0.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
