CornBelters Open Season with Shutout Win over Otters

Normal, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, earned a 5-0 win Friday on CEFCU Opening Night over the Evansville Otters at the Corn Crib.
The CornBelters dented the scoreboard in their first time to the plate as Santiago Chirino hit a one-out triple to the left field wall and was driven in with a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Mike Schwartz.
The Belters added a run in the fourth inning as Roman Hernandez sent a solo drive over the left field fence to increase the lead to 2-0. A long ball over the right center fence with two outs in the sixth by Tyler Shover put the Belters ahead 3-0.
The CornBelters picked up two insurance runs in the eighth inning, both unearned, when Chirino doubled to the right field wall to score Shover and Mark Micowski.
Drew Provence took the win with five innings of work, giving up three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Otters starter Zach Petersime took the loss also with five innings, giving up four hits and two runs while walking three and striking out two.
The CornBelters continue the series with the Otters on Saturday with a 7 p.m. first pitch at the Corn Crib. Right-hander and returning pitcher Michael Schweiss starts for the CornBelters while the Otters give the ball to lefty Chad James.
