Florence, KY - Florence Freedom (2-0) infielder Sam Eberle's offensive performance carried the home team to a 6-2 victory over the visiting Washington Wild Things (0-2), presented by Washington Financial, Friday night at UC Health Stadium.
Florence struck first as Eberle delivered his first home run of the season, a three run bomb in the bottom of the first inning. Two batters later, Washington third baseman, Carter Bell, denied the pressing Freedom anymore runs as he made a leaping grab to end the inning.
The Freedom added two more runs in the second to hold a 5-0 advantage.
Outfielder CJ Beatty started a rally for Washington in the fourth with a one out single and his second hit of the night. Stewart Ijames scored Beatty off a two out double, and Carter Bell followed with an RBI single cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Eberle produced one more time for Freedom as he stroked an RBI single to make the game 6-2.
Chris Phelan, who pitched two innings, took the loss for Washington allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out three in his first start for Washington. Shawn Blackwell allowed one run and added five strikeouts in his four innings of relief. Devin Malone and Matthew Purnell each kept the Freedom off the board in the eighth and ninth.
