Lake Erie Crushers News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, produced two runs in the first inning and rode an eight inning performance from Alex Romero (6-4) to a 2-1 win on Thursday night. With the win, Lake Erie earned a split in the four game series with Evansville.
The Crushers jumped out to a fast start in the first inning against Evansville starter Tyler Vail (2-3). Dane Hutcheon led the game off with a single and then stole second. Cody Lenahan walked with two outs to keep the inning going.
That brought up the right-fielder Doug Trimble, who singled, allowing Hutcheon to score the first run. Lenahan moved to third on the hit. Trimble finished the series with a team-high five hits against Evansville.
Lake Erie manufactured another run in the inning when Trimble stole second. Otters shortstop J.J. Gould couldn't handle the throw cleanly and Lenahan raced home on the error to make it 2-0.
Romero struck out the first five batters of the game before allowing a triple to Daniel Spingola. Trimble raced over to play the ball but his throw to the infield was wild and Spingola came in to score. The unearned run was all the Romero would allow.
The right-hander went a season-high, eight innings while striking out seven and allowing just five hits. He didn't issue a single walk.
In the eighth inning, Romero allowed a leadoff double to Brant Whiting. Gould followed with a comeback to Romero but Whiting had gotten to far off the base at second and Romero threw him out. He would strike out the next two batters to end the inning.
Lake Erie went to Logan Lombana in the ninth and he picked up his second save of the season.
Lake Erie (31-26) will head home to begin a three game series with Southern Illinois tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Evansville falls to 28-28 with the loss.
