Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners were swept by the Schaumburg Boomers by a final score of 4-1 on Thursday night at Rent One Park.
The game featured outstanding pitching by the Miners' Steven Ridings and Schaumburg's Joe Hauser (6-4). After a scoreless first two innings, the Boomers got on the board first on back-to-back singles followed by an RBI groundout from Jack Parenty, with an error in the frame making the run unearned. Schaumburg then scored two runs in the fourth on a two-run homer by Ty Moore for a 3-0 advantage.
Ridings (5-4) settled in from there, as he tied a career-high with seven and two-thirds innings pitched, surrendering four runs (three earned) on eight hits. He was chased after permitting a fourth run in the top of the eighth, again on an RBI hit by Moore, which made the score 4-0.
Offensively, the Miners were unable to score against Hauser until the ninth, as they got the tying run to the plate with a pair of baserunners in the fourth, fifth and sixth, but could not score either time. In the ninth, with Hauser one out away from a shutout, Chance Shepard singled and went to second base on defensive indifference. Joe Dudek then broke up the shutout with an RBI single to make the score 4-1 and chase Hauser from the game after eight and two-thirds innings. Boomers reliever Chris Hall retired Ben Moore on one pitch, however, to end the game.
Southern Illinois next travels to Avon, Ohio to take on the Lake Erie Crusher in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday night at 6:05 p.m. at Sprenger Stadium. Kurt Heyer will start the series opener for the Miners.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's winningest franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in their inaugural season.
