AVON, OH - The Traverse City Beach Bums rallied from an early deficit, but the Lake Erie Crushers scored a run in the bottom of the 12th inning to upend the Beach Bums 4-3.
For the third straight game, the Beach Bums got on the board in the first inning as after working a full count, Ryan Still took Pat Arnold over the rightfield wall for his fouth homer of the season for a 1-0 TC lead.
Lake Erie responded in the bottom of the inning when three straight singles by Daniel Bowman, Jason Taylor and Andrew Davis scored a run for the Crushers to tie the game. A walk to Russ Moldenhauer preceded a sac fly by Robby Kuzdale that scored Taylor for a 2-1 Lake Erie lead. The Crushers added another run in the third when with the bases loaded, Moldenhauer grounded into a double play, scoring Bowman for a 3-1 lead.
It was Traverse City's turn to respond in the fourth as with one out, Marcus Nidiffer took an Arnold pitch over the leftfield wall for his ninth long ball of the year to slice the Crushers lead to 3-2. In the fifth inning Jose Vargas took his turn against Arnold as the Beach Bums third baseman lined a ball over the leftfield fence to tie the game at 3-3.
The game would stay tied into extra innings as both bullpens were magnificent. In the 12th, Lake Erie would load the bases with one out before Adrian Ortiz hit a sac fly to center to score Taylor, giving the Crushers the win.
Matt Smith (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless top of the 12th. Matt Miller (6-4) took the loss for Traverse City.
The Beach Bums now have Monday off before coming home for the final homestand of the regular season as they will take on the West Division leading Gateway Grizzlies on a Two-For-Tuesday at Wuerfel Park. There will be 2-for-1 pricing on all chairback seats for the game, which begins at 7:05 p.m. Brooks Belter (9-2, 3.46) will get the start for Traverse City against Paul Tremlin (6-3, 3.81) for the Grizzlies.
Beach Bums playoff tickets go on sale on Monday at 10 a.m. Traverse City will have home games on Wednesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 6 with a game five of the division series coming up on Sept ember 10 (if necessary). Playoff tickets will cost $10 with general admission seating for all Beach Bums playoff games. Private tables will be $50 per game and suites at Wuerfel Park will be just $100 for up to 10 people.
