Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, thumped the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 10-2, on Friday night from Coca-Cola Park. Syracuse blasted four home runs and scored nine runs between the fourth and fifth innings en route to the win. With the 10-run outburst, the Chiefs have scored 23 runs in two games since returning from the All-Star break.
Syracuse (59-39) broke the game open in the fourth inning against right-hander Sean O'Sullivan. Steven Souza, Jr. led off the inning with a long homer over the left-center field fence to score the game's first run. Tyler Moore then singled to center field. With Zach Walters up to bat, Moore advanced to second base on an O'Sullivan wild pitch. Walters then walked to put runners on first and second with no outs for Brandon Laird. Laird hammered a fastball into the bullpen in left field, giving the Chiefs a four-run lead. Destin Hood continued the hot hitting, hustling out a double on a ball hit into right-center. Jhonatan Solano followed with a double to score Hood for a 5-0 Syracuse lead. A.J. Cole then sacrificed Solano over to third with a bunt. Emmanuel Burriss capped the Chiefs' six-run fourth inning with a base hit to right field, scoring Solano, and making the Syracuse advantage 6-0.
The Chiefs added to their lead in the fifth inning with two swift swings of the bat. With one out, Moore singled to center field. Walters then blasted a two-run home run to right-center field to extend the Syracuse lead to eight. Laird followed with his second home run of the night for a 9-0 Chiefs advantage.
Lehigh Valley (46-52) finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning off right-hander A.J. Cole. With one out, Lars Davis singled to center field. Edgar Duran followed with a single of his own to put runners on first and second base for Ethan Martin. Martin doubled to the center-field fence, scoring Davis and advancing Duran to third base to cut the Syracuse lead to eight runs. Nate Spears followed with a single to right field to score Duran and move Martin to third base, making the score 9-2 in the Chiefs' favor.
Cole recovered in a stellar performance. He threw seven innings of eight-hit, two-run ball in the game to earn his second consecutive win. Cole struck out six IronPigs and walked none in the victory.
Syracuse responded with a run in the eighth inning off reliever B.J. Rosenberg. With one out, Solano ripped a double into the left-field corner. Gregg Dobbs, pinch hitting for Cole, doubled to left field to score Solano for a 10-2 Syracuse lead.
The Chiefs and IronPigs travel to Syracuse to begin a two-day, four-game series on Saturday. In game one, Syracuse sends right-hander Josh Roenicke to the mound to face Lehigh Valley right-hander Brad Lincoln. Game two's starters are still to be determined. First pitch for game one is set for 5:00 with game two to follow 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
