LAFC Kicks off 2021 MLS Campaign against Expansion Team Austin FC on April 17 at Banc of California Stadium
March 10, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Los Angeles FC News Release
The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) announced today that the Club will kick off its fourth season in Major League Soccer against Austin FC on Saturday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. PT at Banc of California Stadium (FOX, FOX Deportes, ESPN 710 AM). It is the second consecutive year that the Black & Gold will host an expansion team for its MLS regular season home opener.
Full dates and broadcast details of LAFC's 2021 MLS regular season schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
LAFC is a perfect 3-0-0 all-time in home openers, with victories over Inter Miami CF (2020), Sporting Kansas City (2019) and Seattle Sounders FC (2018). The match against Austin FC will also mark the third consecutive year that LAFC will play Week 1 at Banc of California Stadium.
Last season, LAFC qualified to the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs for the third straight campaign after finishing in seventh place in the Western Conference standings with a 9-8-5 record. The Club also became the first team in MLS history to defeat three Liga MX teams in the knockout stages of the Concacaf Champions League en route to an appearance in the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Final in December.
Two years ago, the Black & Gold won the 2019 Supporters' Shield after registering the best regular season record of all-time (21-4-9), setting a new single-season points record (72) and finishing tied for the most goals in league history (85).
During the Club's inaugural season in 2018, LAFC set the record for most points by an expansion team (57), and equaled the records for most goals (70) and away victories (7). The Black & Gold also reached the semifinals of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Earlier this month, LAFC announced that it will continue to work with L.A. County public health officials, the City of Los Angeles and Major League Soccer on protocols to ensure fans will be able to safely attend and enjoy a match at Banc of California Stadium at the proper time. The Club plans to announce health and safety protocols for fans as well as a ticket policy for reduced capacity at Banc of California Stadium in the near future.
