ormer Oregon Ducks ace Matt Krook picked up his first professional win as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes salvaged the final game of a three-game series at Ron Tonkin Field with a 5-1 victory over the Hillsboro Hops.

The Hops were going for their second series sweep of the season, but were limited to four hits by Krook (1-1) and three Volcanoes relievers.

Salem-Keizer did all of its damage in the third inning, sending ten men to the plate to score five runs off Hops starter Junior Garcia (1-1). Garcia was otherwise sharp in his five innings, but surrendered seven hits, including three doubles in the fateful third.

The Hops took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Marcus Wilson singled up the middle, stole second and scored on Luke Lowery's two-out base hit down the third base line.

After a leadoff ground rule double in the third by Ryan Kirby and a bunt single by Ryan Howard, Kevin Rivera tied the game 1-1 with a bloop RBI single to right. Zach Bowers followed with a double off the left field wall to drive in two. Bryan Reynolds banked a run with a ground rule double to left later in the inning, followed by an RBI single by NWL batting leader Heath Quinn, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Bowers, Kirby and leadoff batter Ashford Fulmer each had two hits as the Volcanoes outhit Hillsboro 11-4.

All four of Hillsboro's hits came off Krook, who fanned five and walked one over 5 2/3 innings, his longest outing in his seventh professional appearance, six of them starts. Krook departed with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning. With Hillsboro's Ramon Hernandez representing the tying run, C.J. Gettman, a 34th round draft pick out of Central Washington, came on to throw one pitch, inducing a harmless fly out to to center to end the threat. The Wenatchee, Washington native then struck out the side around two walks in a scoreless seventh inning.

Marcus Wilson reached base three times for the Hops, going 1-for-2 with two walks. His 36 bases on balls leads the NWL and sets a new team record, previously held by Taylor Ratliff.

The Hops are off the next three days for the NWL-Pioneer League All-Star Game. Starting pitcher Tyler Mark and relievers Jake Winston and Tommy Eveld will represent Hillsboro in Ogden, Utah Tuesday night. Hillsboro then hits the road for the next eight games, starting Thursday night in Everett against the North Division-leading AquaSox.
