Sellout Crowd on Hand as Indians Fall 5-2

July 31, 2016 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release

Spokane, WA - The Indians just can't figure out how to beat the AquaSox. On a smoky Saturday evening in Spokane, Everett continued their season-long mastery of the Indians with a 5-2 win in front of a sellout crowd of 7,064 fans at Avista Stadium for Fireworks Night presented by Toyota, KAYU FOX 28, Magic 790, and Spokane's Greatest Hits Key 101.

The AquaSox have now captured six of eight games against their division-rival Indians this season by a combined margin of 48-40. Everett jumped all over starter CD Pelham (0-2) scoring twice in the first and three times in the second as Spokane's southpaw struggled to find the strike zone.

The Indians bullpen helped keep the game close with Kevin Lenik and Alex Daniele combing for 7.1 innings of scoreless relief with 10 strikeouts. After some early season struggles, Lenik has been nearly unhittable for Spokane with four straight scoreless appearances totaling 9.1 innings.

Despite a herculean effort from the relief corps Spokane's offense couldn't muster a comeback as they continued their second half swoon. The Indians scored once in the fourth on an RBI single from Xavier Turner and again in the fifth on a base knock from Darius Day but they were held off the board for the final four frames on a night they struck out 11 times and failed to draw a walk.

Charles Leblanc, Seth Spivey, and Alex Kowalczyk all picked up two base hits in defeat. The loss dropped the Indians to 2-3 in the second half and 21-22 overall.
