Elmira Jackals News Release
Week 25 Game Results:
4/5/06 Danbury 6 @ Elmira 1
Elmira, NY - David Beauregard scored a hat trick and Donny Grover tallied four assists as the Elmira Jackals suffered a crushing 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Danbury Trashers Wednesday night at the First Arena.
In the first period the Jackals were able to keep the puck in the attacking zone for most of the period, and at one point they were out shooting the Trashers 12-2, but Trashers goaltender Jayme Platt denied all shots in his direction. Both teams spent time on a 5-on-3 power play, but neither could find the net. At the end of the first period there was no score and the Jackals were out-shooting the Trashers 14-10.
In the second period the Trashers struck first at the 3:50 mark as Jean-Michel Daoust knocked in a one-timer from Donny Grover. At 7:44 Danbury took a two-goal lead when Jeff Daw scored a power play goal off a deflected shot from Grover. The Trashers' third goal of the period went in at 10:47 scored by David Beauregard, also assisted by Grover. Elmira cut the Trashers lead to 3-1 at the 15:03 mark when Kevin Cooper scored a power play goal, assisted by Trevor Burgess and Mathieu Wathier, but that would be the last time Elmira lit the lamp on the night.
Danbury systematically wore the Jackals down in the third period. Troy Smith's shot from the blue line eluded several screens and goaltender Tyson Gajda at 3:46 to make it 4-1 Trashers. Then Beauregard put on an individual clinic. He scored his second goal of the night at 12:29 on a beautiful backhand shot. Beauregard then capped off his hat trick with a power play goal at 17:11, his 38th goal of the season, assisted by Grover, the rookie defenseman's 4th assist of the game.
Jayme Platt stopped a lofty 44-of-45 shots to pick up the win for Danbury, while Tyson Gajda suffered his 5th loss of the season, making 34 saves on 40 shots for Elmira. Danbury finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play, while Elmira was 1-for-5.
4/7/06 Danbury 4 @ Elmira 2
Elmira, NY - Kevin Cooper scored two goals, but the Elmira Jackals could not hold off a surging Danbury Trashers as the visitors took the win 4-2 Friday night at the First Arena.
The Jackals were the first and only team to find the net in the first period of play. Just over halfway through the period at 11:21 Trevor Burgess passed the puck up the ice to Konstantin Kalmikov who carried it into the zone and slid it between a defenders legs to Kevin Cooper who put a low shot through the five hole to light the lamp and give Elmira the 1-0 lead. The 5-on-3 power play goal was Cooper's 30th of the season placing him at second in scoring on the Jackals this season. The outstanding play of Jackals goaltender Matt Meacham kept the Trashers scoreless as he turned away all fifteen of Danbury's shots in the first period. The Jackals only managed to get 7 shots in the first, but that proved to be enough to take the lead in the first.
In the second period it only took Danbury 3:35 to tie the game when Jean-Michel Daoust tipped a puck out of mid-air on a pass from Mike Omicioli. The Trashers then took lead when Drew Omicioli scored on a nice play setup by Troy Smith and Mike Omicioli at 5:38. Kevin Cooper was the man that would tie the game for the Jackals 2-2, when he netted his second of the night and 31st of the season at 10:20. Sam Paolini and John Donnelly were credited with the assists on the shorthanded goal, Cooper's 3rd short-handed goal of the season. Danbury took the lead for the second time in the game on a power play when Drew Omicioli was setup by his brother Mike for a one-timer past Meacham at 14:43. The horn would sound with the Trashers leading 3-2 on the board and 31-21 in shots.
Only one goal was scored in the third and it came off the stick of Danbury's David Hymovitz at 3:12 of the period. That's the way the game would end with the Jackals falling to the Trashers by a score of 4-2. Elmira out-shot Danbury 18-9 in the third period but failed to score.
Trashers goaltender Jayme Platt stopped 37-of-39 shots to earn his 15th win, while Elmira's Matt Meacham was excellent in goal despite the loss; making 36 saves on 40 shots. Elmira was 1-for-10 on the power play, while Danbury finished 1-for-6.
4/8/06 Elmira 5 @ Adirondack 6
Glens Falls, NY - Jarrett Konkle scored two goals, tying a franchise record, but the Elmira Jackals dropped a heartbreaker 6-5 to the Adirondack Frostbite Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Frostbite defenseman Bob Rapoza put Adirondack in front just 28 seconds with a wrist shot from the point. Jason Cassells scored his first goal since rejoining the team from Richmond, tying the game 1-1 at 11:29, assisted by Trevor Burgess and Sam Paolini. Ryan Bennett scored a power play goal at 14:36 for a 2-1 Frostbite lead. But Paolini would tie the game with a power play goal of his own, assisted by Flo Iberer and Jason Sessa at 17:10. Though the score was tied at two, Adirondack out-shot the Jackals 14-9 in the opening period.
Jarrett Konkle put on a record-tying display to start the second period. Konkle scored at 3:12 of the second, putting the Jackals on top 3-2, assisted by Burgess and Konstantin Kalmikov. Just 1:58 later, Konkle stole the puck on a Frostbite power play, skated down the right wing and ripped a wrist shot past goalie Kris Tebbs at 5:10 for an unassisted, short-handed goal and a 4-2 lead. The goal was Konkle's 36th goal of the season, tying Glenn Stewart for the Jackals franchise record for goals scored in a single season. But Adirondack's Sylvain Cloutier was not going to let Konkle have all the fun. Cloutier answered with two straight goals, one at 9:40 and the second at 14:19, to level the scored at 4-4 after two periods of play. The Jackals rebounded in the second, out-shooting the Frostbite 12-8.
Elmira again pulled in front at 8:50 of the third period when Kevin Cooper's shot deflected off Adirondack defenseman J.F. Picard and into the net for a 5-4 Elmira lead. The lead lasted 28 seconds until Mark Hurtubise tied the game at five at 9:18. Late in the game the Frostbite earned their 7th power play with 3:25 remaining and they would not disappoint the home crowd. Mike Berry turned in his own rebound for a power play goal at 17:20 and a 6-5 lead. The Jackals got a power play shortly afterwards, but they could not find the equalizer. Elmira out-shot the Frostbite 17-to-7 in the final period, but finished one goal short.
Kris Tebbs earned the win in goal for the Frostbite, making 33 saves on 38 shots; while Jackals goaltender Matt Meacham stopped 23-of-29 shots in goal for Elmira. Adirondack was 2-for-7 on the power play. Elmira was 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
4/9/06 Richmond 4 @ Elmira 2
Elmira, NY - Jarrett Konkle set a new team record for goals in a single season, but the Elmira Jackals failed to spoil the Richmond Riverdogs game, losing 4-2 Sunday afternoon at the First Arena.
Mike Oliveira put the Riverdogs on top with a power play goal at 6:34 and Richmond had a 1-0 lead. But Jason Sessa answered with his 21st goal of the season at 15:13, finishing an incisive pass from Sam Paolini to tie the game; Trevor Burgess also assisted on the goal. Elmira out-shot Richmond 25-15 in the first period, but only managed one goal past goalie Mike D'Alessandro.
In the second period Richmond wasted little time in regaining their lead. John DiPace scored the team's second power play goal of the game at 2:41 for a 2-1 lead. It was 3-1 after Todd Grant capitalized on a defensive zone turnover by the Jackals at 6:04. Rookie forward Jarrett Konkle put himself into the history books when he blasted home his 37th goal of the season at 18:02 of the period. The power play goal, assisted by Burgess and Flo Iberer, put Konkle one goal ahead of Glenn Stewart as the top single season goal scorer in Jackals franchise history.
The Jackals had several chances to tie the game in the final period, but came up short. D'Alessandro robbed record setter Jarrett Konkle again in the final minute of the game, while goalie Tyson Gajda was pulled for the extra attacker. The Riverdogs added an empty net goal by Brian Goudie with 1.5 seconds left on the clock to ice the contest.
Mike D'Alessandro earned his 32nd win of the season by stopping 44-of-46 shots in the game. Jackals goaltender Tyson Gajda made 32 saves on 35 shots in the loss.
Jackals Player & Goaltender of the Week: (Week 25)
Trevor Burgess - D 4 GP, 0 goals, 6 assists, 6 points, +2, 2 PIMs
Captain Trevor Burgess was the high point scorer for the Jackals in week 25 as he had 6 points (all assists), 2 penalty minutes and was +2. Burgess was also the only Elmira player to score at least one point in each of the team's 4 games during the week. He had an assist Wednesday night in their 6-1 loss to Danbury. Friday again facing Danbury, the Carleton Place, Ontario native had another assist, in a 4-2 loss. Saturday in Glens Falls, Burgess had 2 assists and was +4 in a wild 6-5 loss to Adirondack. He capped off the week with 2 more assists Sunday in a 4-2 loss to Richmond. On the season, Burgess leads the Jackals with 50 assists, the first time any Jackals' player has reached that mark since Randy Murphy put up 67 assists in the 2002-03 season.
Tyson Gajda - G 2 GP, 0-2-0, 4.53 GAA, 0.880 SV%, 66 saves
Tyson Gajda split the 0-4-0 week with goaltending partner Matt Meacham. Gajda had 34 saves Wednesday in a 6-1 loss to Danbury. He followed it up with a strong 32 save effort on 35 shots Sunday against Richmond, but an empty net goal gave the Riverdogs a 4-2 win. For the week, Gajda had a 4.53 GAA and a 0.880 save percentage, stopping 66-of-78 shots faced. On the year, the Westfield, Massachusetts native is 4-6-1 in 12 games played, with a 3.47 GAA and a 0.904 save percentage.
JACKAL BITES:
- A NEW TEAM RECORD - Rookie LW Jarrett Konkle set a new Jackals franchise for goals in a single season on Sunday against the Richmond Riverdogs. Konkle's 37th goal of the year (a power play goal at 18:02 of the 2nd period) put him one goal beyond Glenn Stewart, who set the mark in the 2002-03 season. Konkle has scored 3 goals in his last two games and has two games left to put the record even higher. -
- NO SELFISH PLAY HERE - Captain Trevor Burgess had 6 assists this week, putting his season total to a team-leading 50 assists. The defenseman becomes just the second player in team history to ever reach the 50 assist mark and it is the first time any Jackals player has dished out 50 helpers in one year since Randy Murphy set the team record with 67 in the 2002-03 season. Even more special is the fact that Burgess earned his 50th assist on Jarrett Konkle's record-setting 37th goal on Sunday. -
- A STREAK SNAPPED - LW Kevin Cooper had his 3-game goal scoring streak and 4-game point scoring streak snapped Sunday when he failed to score against Richmond. Cooper had 4 goals in the first three games this week and had an assist last Sunday against Roanoke as a part of his point streak. -
- THE ASSISTS KEEP COMING - D Trevor Burgess is on a 4-game assist streak, tallying 6 assists during the week. It is the second longest active streak in the UHL, behind Kalamazoo's Jason Deitsch who has a 5-game streak with 8 assists over that time. -
- CLINGING TO HIS LEADS - Whether proud or not, D Chris Mann is hanging on to his penalty minute marks despite being out for the season with a broken jaw. Mann, who has not played since March 18th, still leads the UHL in Minor Penalties (79), 4 minors ahead of Kalamazoo's Tyler Willis. He also is clinging to 4th place in the league in total minutes (313), 13 minutes ahead of Willis. Kalamazoo has 3 games left during the regular season. -
- TWO MORE GAMES - The Jackals will finish the season with a home and home series with Adirondack next weekend. Elmira is 4-6-3 against the Frostbite this season and with two wins they could solidify a .500 record against Adirondack. Elmira has an above .500 record against just two teams this season; Missouri (whom the Jackals swept the 3-game series) and Roanoke. In a strange twist that only the shootout can allow, both Roanoke and the Jackals have a winning record against each other; Elmira is 5-4-2 against the Vipers, while Roanoke is 6-3-2 against Elmira. -
