Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN The Knoxville Ice Bears will replace their player skates for sleds to compete in a sled hockey exhibition game against the recently formed Knoxville Sled Bears. The event which is free to attend will be held on Sunday, December 18th at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum from 12:30 until 2 pm.

Sled ice hockey is an adaptive sport that is designed to allow participants who have some physical disabilities to play the game of ice hockey. The USA Hockey website states the rules of the game are similar to traditional ice hockey but with use of different equipment. Players sit in specially designed sleds that sit atop two hockey skate blades. Players use two sticks, each with metal picks on the butt ends, to propel down the ice. The Knoxville Sled Bears, who are part of the Knoxville Amateur Hockey Association (KAHA), were one of 10 recipients who were awarded $25,000 in grants from USA Hockey and Labatt USA as part of the "Pass It Forward" initiative in November of 2015. The team is comprised of local disabled athletes who travel around the southeast participating in games and tournaments. The Knoxville Ice Bears will play the Knoxville Sled Bears in a standard sled hockey game that will have the entire roster from both teams participate in this exhibition. The goal of the event is to raise awareness for the fledgling sport in east Tennessee. The game is free to attend and there will be opportunities to donate if you are interested in supporting the growth of the program.
