Charlotte Knights News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) -- Jordan Danks drove in two runs and made a run-saving catch, and Josh Phegley drove home the winning run with two outs in the eighth to give the Charlotte Knights a 3-2 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Saturday night at Knights Stadium. With the win, the Knights now have a four-game winning streak - tying their season-high. Charlotte has taken the first three games of the series and are now four games above .500 on the season.
The Knights turned a double play in the first inning, Matt Zaleski picked off two runners in the second, and the Gold Glove winner Danks laid out for a shot to the left-center field gap with two runners on base in the third to keep it scoreless.
Lehigh Valley, however, broke through in the fourth inning when Cody Overbeck doubled Steve Susdorf to third and he scored on Derrick Mitchell's groundout.
Danks tied it up in the home half of the inning with a base hit that scored Dan Johnson and extended Danks' hitting streak to seven games.
The IronPigs got the lead right back in the fifth when Domonic Brown singled off the right field wall to bring home Andres Blanco, who had walked.
Danks tied it up again in the sixth with a towering home run over the right field wall. He was 2-4 with a run scored and two RBIs on the night.
Deunte Heath and Donnie Veal (2-0, 1.29) only allowed one hit and struck out five over three innings of work and Veal got the win.
In the eighth, Johnson led off with a walk and Hector Gimenez dropped down a sacrifice bunt to get him to second. Jim Gallagher entered the game to pinch run for Johnson and Phegley drove him in with a two-strike, two-out base hit to left. Johnson was 1-2 with a run scored and two more walks to give him a league-leading 45 walks on the year.
Brian Bruney threw a perfect ninth for his eighth save in nine opportunities and his seventh-straight scoreless outing.
On Sunday the Knights will go for the sweep of the four-game series with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. Left-hander Charlie Leesman (3-4, 2.36) is slated to toe the rubber for Charlotte and he will be opposed by RHP Scott Elarton (5-1, 2.98) of Lehigh Valley. The Knights will honor the Military and Knights players will wear camouflage jerseys. After the game, fans can expect thrilling fireworks courtesy of 1110 WBT, Time Warner Cable and Carolina Weekly.
