Rochester Red Wings News Release
Casey Rogowski's single in the 14th inning broke open an extra inning affair, leading the Charlotte Knights to a 6-3 win over the Red Wings Saturday afternoon at Frontier Field. Glenn Williams had a two-run home run for the Wings; Julio DePaula, pitching his fourth inning of relief, got the loss for Rochester.
Wings starter Scott Baker began the game with a walk to Knights leadoff hitter Jerry Owens, but the damage was quickly erased when Pedro Lopez grounded into a double play. Baker proceeded to strike out Rogowski with a pitch on the outside corner.
Baker missed on a 3-2 pitch to allowing a leadoff walk to Josh Fields. A single by Sweeney put a runner in scoring position for the Knights. Ernie Young lined a Baker pitch up the middle to score Fields for the first run of the game and move Sweeney over to third. With the infield playing in and one out, second baseman Matt Tolbert threw out Ryan Sweeney trying to score. Baker struck out Ryan Smith swinging to end the inning with only one run allowed.
In the top of the third, a fielding miscue allowed Jerry Owens to reach base. After stealing second and moving to third on a ground out by Lopez, he scored on a deep sacrifice fly to right by Rogowski. Baker ended the frame by striking out Josh Fields looking.
In the bottom of the inning, after Matt Moses and Trent Oeltjen were retired by starter Vladimir Nunez, Tolbert smacked a triple over the heads of the center and right fielders and to the wall. Denard Span capitalized on the opportunity with a clutch RBI single to left field. Span followed up his hit with a stolen base to put himself in scoring position for Tommy Watkins, who walked. With two runners on, Doug Deeds struck out swinging.
In the bottom of the fourth, Chris Heintz hit a slow dribbler up the third base line and beat the throw by Nunez; Heintz was credited with with an infield single. Williams launched a Nunez pitch into the Red Wings bullpen for a two-run home run, giving the Red Wings their first lead of the game.
Baker had a scary moment to begin the fifth as a line drive by Smith ricocheted off the pitcher and all the way over to Moses at third, resulting in an infield single. Baker stayed in the game however and showed no ill effects as he induced a double play from the speedy Owens. Pedro Lopez flailed feebly at a well placed Baker pitch to end to end the inning.
The Red Wings retained a one run lead until the eighth inning when Owens led off with a single off Tristan Crawford, and stole second base, his second steal of the game. With Owens in scoring position, Lopez slashed a double into the alley in right-center field to bring in the run. Crawford settled down and retired the next three batters in order.
The Wings had a chance to win the ninth against Boone Logan; Oletjen led off with his second straight infield single, and moved over to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Tolbert. Logan struck out Span on a 3-2 pitch for the second out. Watkins was walked intentionally, and Matthew LeCroy flied out after pinch-hitting for Deeds. Another missed opportunity for the Wings in the 10th, when Jones hit a lead-off double but was stranded at second. The Wings also put baserunners on in the 11th, 12th and 14th innings, leaving a total of 13 left on base for the day.
DePaula, the last of seven Rochester pitchers, came in the game to start the 11th inning. Ehren Wassermann was the winner for Charlotte, and Corwin Malone pitched the 14th and was credited with the save.
NOTES: Jason Miller and Brian Bass each pitched a scoreless relief inning... Carmen Cali, just activated from the disabled list, retired the only batter he faced to end the eighth... Bobby Korecky added two scoreless innings... Saturday was the longest game at Frontier since an Aug. 19, 2002 loss to Pawtucket 15 innings...Span made perhaps the catch of the season so far in the 12th, taking away an extra base hit from Lopez with two runners on.
