Richmond, VA - The Richmond Braves downed the Indianapolis Indians 4-1 Saturday at The Diamond. The Braves Buddy Carlyle tossed six strong innings and Martin Prado had three hits as the Braves won for the fourth time in six games.
The Braves grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Yunel Escobar. The Indians tied the game in the second on a home run by Ryan Doumit. The Braves moved ahead to stay in the bottom half on an RBI triple by Willie Harris and a run scoring single by Martin Prado. Richmond added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by T.J. Bohn.
Carlyle was in command for 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on three hits. Carlyle threw 49 of his 70 total pitches for strikes and recorded four strikeouts. He also got help in the fifth inning, when shortstop Yunel Escobar made a lunging catch. The Indians had runners on the corners with two outs when Escobar leaped to his right to rob the Indians starting pitcher Shane Youman of a base hit.
Carlyle earned his first victory of the season to even his record at 1-1. Youman took the loss and is now 0-2. Buddy Hernandez recorded his first save of the season. Hernandez, who inherited two runners, got the Indians' catcher Ryan Doumit to ground into a double play. Hernandez retired the Indians' Jose Hernandez to complete Saturday's contest.
The Braves wrap up their 3-game series with the Indians Sunday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Richmond will start RHP Kevin Barry (0-0, 7.36) against the Indians RHP John Van Benschoten (0-1, 13.50).
