Charlotte Knights News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) -- Atlanta pitching prospect Randall Delgado struck out 10 batters over six innings and only allowed one run as the Gwinnett Braves defeated the Charlotte Knights 7-2 on Tuesday at Knights Stadium.
The Knights (63-49) got on the board first off of Delgado in the first inning. Charlotte strung three straight hits together and Dan Johnson's bloop hit down the left-field line plated Drew Garcia to put Charlotte up 1-0. Garcia reached base three times in the game on a base hit, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch.
Gwinnett seized the lead off of Anthony Carter (2-5, 4.93) in the third inning. Felix Pie drove in Brian Friday with a two-out base hit and Josh Wilson doubled to left to bring Pie home and give the Braves a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, a pair of two-out walks led to the Braves adding to their lead. Brandon Kloess walked J.C.Boscan and Pie, and Wilson's base hit scored Boscan to make it 3-1 game at that point.
Delgado (2-1, 4.32) only allowed five hits and walked three to earn the victory.
Charlotte clawed within a run in the home seventh when Jared Mitchell scored on a Tyler Saladino groundout to first.
Donnie Veal and Daniel Moskos walked the bases loaded in the visitors' ninth, and Moskos threw a wild pitch to give Gwinnett another run. Pie then drove home two more on a base hit to right to make it 6-2. He was 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, and three RBI. Pie eventually scored on Wilson's infield hit to complete the scoring.
Brian Bruney started the game on a Major League rehab assignment and threw 11 pitches in the first inning. He struck out one and allowed one hit in the scoreless frame.
The Knights split the series with the Braves 2-2 and the overall season series 11-11. After an off day on Wednesday, the Knights will begin an eight-game road trip Thursday night in Louisville, KY. Charlotte will play four against the Louisville Bats followed by four in Indianapolis against the Indians. The Knights will return home to Knights Stadium on Friday, August 10 to open an eight-game homestand.
