Charlotte Knights News Release
(ALLENTOWN, PA) - Third baseman Jake Burger broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI single to lead the Charlotte Knights to a 2-1 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Wednesday night in game two of the six-game series from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. The win was Charlotte's seventh over the team's last 10 games.
In the eighth inning, second baseman Yolbert Sánchez started things off with a single to extend his hit streak to a season-high 10 games. Burger then followed with the RBI single to right field, which scored Sánchez for the team's second run of the game. The run came off Lehigh Valley reliever Tyler Cyr (2-3, 2.65), who was charged with the loss.
The Knights trailed the 'Pigs after two innings thanks to an RBI groundout by Jack Conley in the second inning. Right fielder Micker Adolfo tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI ground-rule double. One inning later, Burger played the hero.
LHP John Parke started for the Knights and allowed just one run over four strong innings. Chicago White Sox RHP Vince Velasquez continued his major league rehab assignment and came on in relief of Parke to start the fifth inning. Velasquez allowed just two hits over 2.1 shutout innings.
Charlotte RHP Daniel Winkler (4-0, 3.29) earned the win after retiring both of the batters he faced in the seventh inning. LHP Andrew Perez then pitched a scoreless eighth inning and LHP Bennett Sousa earned his third save of the season after a scoreless ninth inning. Sousa struck-out three batters in the ninth to save his third game in three chances this season with Charlotte.
The Knights managed six hits overall in Wednesday's game and center fielder Blake Rutherford had two of them. For Rutherford, he extended his hit streak to nine consecutive games.
The two teams will continue the six-game series on Thursday night with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. from Coca-Cola Park. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
