Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the final game of their three-game series with the Charlotte Knights, 7-1, at BB&T Ballpark in uptown Charlotte. Chris Beck shut down the Chiefs in seven innings, and Trayce Thompson drove in four runs in the series-clinching victory.

Syracuse (16-21) grabbed the game's first run early on. Mark Minicozzi reached with one out in the second inning on an error by third baseman Matt Davidson. Davidson moved around to third after Jason Martinson was hit by a pitch and Matt den Dekker singled. Steve Lerud grounded out to second with the bases loaded, scoring Minicozzi on Lerud's sixth RBI of the road trip.

Charlotte (21-15) tied the score a half-inning later. Chiefs starter Bruce Billings hit Davidson with a pitch, surrendered a single to Dan Black and walked Thompson to load the bases with no one out. After a strikeout, George Kottaras drove in Davidson on a sacrifice fly to tie the score.

The Knights took the lead for good in the fourth. Again, Davidson, Black and Thompson all reached base to start an inning against Billings. This time, the trio reached on three straight singles, with Thompson again driving in Davidson to give Charlotte a 2-1 lead. Three batters later, Drew Garcia singled in Black to extend the lead to two.

Billings became just the second Chiefs starter to allow more than three runs in the month of May after allowing a run in the fifth. Jason Coats singled to start the inning and stole second base with two outs. He scored on a triple by Black to push the Knights lead to 4-1.

Charlotte broke the game open in the seventh. Thompson picked up three more RBIs on one swing, a three-run home run to left field off Eric Fornataro, giving the Knights a six-run advantage.

Syracuse returns home Monday off a 4-3 road trip to take on Lehigh Valley. Taylor Jordan is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite Phillippe Amount for the IronPigs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
