Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT: Extra-base hits by the offense and impressive impromptu pitching carried the RailRiders to a 3-2 defeat of the Bulls on Saturday. SWB's third straight win has it over .500 for the first time since the Opening Day victory over Syracuse. The Bulls lost for the fifth time in six games.
CRUISIN': The originally-scheduled starter, Bryan Mitchell, was whisked back to the bigs by the Yankees. That set the stage for Joel De La Cruz (3-0) who tossed five solid frames in his first start of 2015. He earned his first win as an SWB starter since his May 4, 2014 debut. He went 0-5 in 11 starts in between.
ON A RUN: In the fifth, back-to-back doubles by Nick Noonan and Cole Figueroa got the RailRiders a run. An inning later, Kyle Roller bombed his team-leading sixth home run for the 3-2 score that would go final.
THE MOUNTAIN: Five of Roller's homers have come over his last 15 games.
THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN: The RailRiders held on thanks to outstanding 2015 SWB debuts by Caleb Cotham and Mark Montgomery. Cotham struck out six over three perfect innings on 45 pitches (30 strikes). Montgomery worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn a save.
YOU DOWN WITH OBP?: Rob Refsnyder singled twice and scored once as he extended the IL's best active on-base streak to 18 games. His run started in game two of the April 25 doubleheader versus Pawtucket. In that time, he has hit .370 while posting an OBP of .439 and 10 of his 13 RBIs. His 11 doubles had him tri-leading active IL players entering today after Maikel Franco's 12 two-base hits received a promotion to the Phillies. Refsnyder has crushed in 15 road games (.333/.400/.444/.844) compared to his 17 home contests (.254/.306/.313/.619).
COMEBACK KIDS: SWB overcame a multiple-run hole to win for the first time.
DOUBLE-DIPPIN': With two more doubles, SWB raised its IL-best total to 69.
GET OFF MY LAWN: Durham struggled to get men on base. Thanks in part to a pair of double plays turned by the RailRiders, the Bulls left just three men on base and went 0-for-1 with men in scoring position.
UP, DOWN & OUT OF TOWN: Other roster moves before the game saw reliever Jared Burton released by the Yankees while the big club optioned right-hander Jose Ramirez back to SWB and southpaw Miguel Sulbaran joined the RailRiders from Double-A Trenton.
BOBA FETT? BOBA FETT?! WHERE?!: The RailRiders played in front of their biggest crowd of the season. On Star Wars Night at the DBAP, the paid attendance was announced at 10,882.
THAT WAS EASY: The game took just 2:08 to play.
GETTIN' FIGGY WITH IT: Figueroa went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. He has gone 4-for-9 with three doubles and two RBIs against his former club. He is the IL's hardest man to strike out with a plate appearance-to-strikeout ratio of 24.8:1.
ONE-RUN FUN: SWB improved to 9-4 in one-run games.
YOU'RE OUT OF ORDER: Tyler Austin hit seventh for the first time this season. He snapped an 0-for-14 slide with a sixth-inning single.
TWO FOR THE MONEY: Today, the RailRiders will try to lift their record to two games above .500 for the first time since the 2014 squad was 29-27 after a June 2 victory at Indianapolis.
