Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws have taken control of first place in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League for the first time of the season with a 4-1 win at the Delmarva Shorebirds. The win is the fifth straight for the BlueClaws, and they are 6-2 this season on the road. The BlueClaws (11- 6) got another dominant performance from pitcher Jason Knapp.
In his first three starts, Knapp (1-2) got all of three runs of support, by the third inning; the BlueClaws had surpassed that amount in one game. In the first inning, the BlueClaws put runners on first and third before a Travis Mattair sacrifice fly brought Jesus Villegas home, and an RBI single by Zach Collier made the game 2-0.
The BlueClaws added to their lead with single runs in the second and third innings as D'Arby Myers singled and stole second before being singled home by Anthony Gose, and Travis d'Arnaud scored, after he doubled, on an RBI single by Mattair.
The Shorebirds (9-6) then scored a run of their own in the fourth as Elvin Polanco hit his first home run of the season. The home run made it 4-1 and was also the first allowed by a BlueClaws pitcher all season in 17 games played. The BlueClaws were the last pitching staff to allow a home run.
Knapp was dominant again for the fourth time in as many starts in his first win of the season. He worked well, striking out seven in six innings allowing the run on the solo shot in the fourth. He added to his league lead in strikeouts, he has 37. Walter Tejeda came in for Knapp in the seventh and eighth and worked two perfect innings. BJ Rosenberg worked the ninth and picked up his second save of the season.
Shorebirds starter Oliver Drake (1-1), out of the US Naval Academy, went five innings, allowing four runs, three earned, and picked up his first loss of the season. Eddie Gamboa came in to work the final four innings of the game and only allowed one baserunner.
The BlueClaws have allowed one run in their last 28 innings.
The BlueClaws look to make it five in a row on Tuesday at 7:05 as they take on the Shorebirds in game two of a three game series. Rob Roth (1-0) will make his fourth start of the season and will be opposed by lefty Rich Zagone (1-1).
