Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Lake County Captains (7-10) broke apart a scoreless tie with a six-run fifth inning, and the Hagerstown Suns could not rebound (5-10), falling 8-4 for their fifth consecutive loss.
Suns starter Marcos Frias (0-1) was locked in a pitchers' duel with Lake County counterpart T.J. House (1-1) through four innings until giving up two singles and hitting a batter to load the bases in the top of the fifth. With one out, the Suns appeared to be on their way to getting out of the inning unscathed when first baseman Ronnie LaBrie threw home after fielding a slow chopper up the line. Catcher Derek Norris let the throw go over his glove to the backstop, however, and two Captains scored on the error.
Four batters later, Lake County's Nate Recknagel doubled with the bases loaded to drive in the final three runs of the inning and put his team up 6-0.
An RBI single by left fielder Robbie Jacobsen got the Suns on the board in the bottom of the fifth, but the Captains got the run back in the eighth to go up 7-1. Hagerstown plated three in the bottom of the eighth - the last coming on a single by third baseman Steven Souza - before a towering solo home run over the right field wall by Lake County second baseman Karexon Sanchez quieted the Suns' crowd once and for all in the top of the ninth.
House pitched six strong innings for the Captains, allowing just one run and four hits. Steve Smith picked up his third save of the season with an inning and two thirds of scoreless relief.
Just two of the six runs charged to Frias over his four and two thirds innings were earned. On offense, Souza and centerfielder Chris Curran each had multi-hit games for Hagerstown, scoring a run apiece.
The Suns and Captains play the second game of their three-game series at Municipal Stadium on Tuesday, April 28. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. and gates will open at 5:35.
