Kitchener Rangers News Release
The results are in, and the inaugural season of Project Shutout Hunger was a success, both here in Waterloo Region and across the Ontario Hockey League.
This fall, the Kitchener Rangers reached out to local minor hockey teams, asking for their help in shutting out hunger in our community. Teams were asked to collect food and funds for the Food Bank of Waterloo Region, and the three teams with the highest total per player were rewarded with a practice with one of the Rangers' coaches.
In total, the teams that participated in Project Shutout Hunger raised 6,510 pounds of food and $2,464 in cash donations. Congratulations to our winning clubs: Kitchener Minor Hockey Major Atom A/AA, the Waterloo Wolves Major Atom AA and the Wilmot Wolverines Atom LL Girls Hockey team.
In addition, the Rangers hosted a holiday game day Food Drive, asking fans to provide a gift of food or funds on their way into The Aud. This special event raised an additional 1398 pounds of food and $2,754.05 in monetary donations.
Project Shutout Hunger and the accompanying game night Food Drive raised the equivalent of 11,393 pounds of food for the Food Bank of Waterloo Region, enough to provide 26,198 meals for those who require assistance.
Introduced in August, 2014, 'Project Shutout Hunger' is a league-wide initiative in partnership with Coach4Food, the Ontario Association of Food Banks, the Gift of Giving Back, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. OHL member teams helped raise 252,679 pounds of food for food banks in communities across the league, surpassing the initial goal of raising 200,000 pounds of food to give back to local families.
"No person should go hungry, and seeing the hockey community truly embrace Project Shutout Hunger has been incredible," said OHL Commissioner David Branch. "The tremendous efforts of our clubs, minor hockey teams, and the many volunteers in communities across the OHL truly made a difference helping families in need this season."
