South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays took a commanding 2-0 series lead against the Gwinnett Gladiators on Nate Kiser's game winning overtime goal, lifting the Rays to a 5-4 win at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"This was certainly a really big win for us," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "I can guarantee that that was the biggest goals of [Nate] Kiser's career."
The first period started out poorly for the Rays when Guillaume Desbiens got his first goal of the playoffs in the first :30 seconds to give Gwinnett the early lead. But, much like last night, the Stingrays answered back. This time it was Todd Griffith who got his first of the playoffs from Pierre-Luc O'Brien at 11:48 tying the game at one.
In the second period, the Gladiators retook the lead when matt Anderson scored a short handed goal. But on that very same power play, South Carolina tied the game at two when Chris Chaput got his third of the playoffs at 6:38 from Marty Guerin and Cail MacLean. The Rays got their first lead of the night on a long pass from Sean Collins that found Trent Campbell alone at the blue line. Campbell got the puck past Craig Kowalski and after two periods of the play, the Rays were up 3-2.
In the third period, Matt Anderson got the tying goal at 1:10 to make the score 3-3. But the Rays pounced on the lead at 7:49 on Travis Morin's fourth goal of the game from MacLean and Guerin. The goal was the second power play goal of the night for South Carolina. When Tomas Pospisil tied the game up at 15:35, the Rays were forced to go to overtime for the fourth time this post season.
8:06 into the overtime period Nate Kiser shot a laser from the point that found its way past Kowalski. The goal was the first for Kiser in the post season.
The winning goaltender was Davis Parley who stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Kowalski who stopped 19 of the 24 shots he faced. The Rays went 2-6 on the power play while killing off all five short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action on Monday night when they look to finish off the Gwinnett Gladiators at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Game time will be at 7:05 and it will be broadcast on ESPN 910 The TEAM.
