Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met for Game 5 of their National Conference Quarter-Final series tonight in Bakersfield. Victoria held a 3-1 series lead after Wednesday evening's 4-1 victory in California.
Bakersfield came out and took a 1-0 lead in the game's first two minutes when Brett Lutes counted a power play goal. Lutes fired a shot from the top of the left circle past Salmon Kings' netminder Billy Thompson. Victoria would even it up with a power play goal of their own when Dylan Yeo scored his fourth goal in three games with a fireball from the high slot past Condors' goalie Yutaka Fukufuji. Bakersfield retook the lead when Andrew Ianiero picked up his own rebound and slipped it through a maze of bodies in front of Thompson. The Condors would lead 2-1 after the first period.
The Salmon Kings came out with a ton of energy in the second period and it paid off. After peppering Fukufuji, who made a handful of brilliant saves, Victoria's Ash Goldie tied the game when he charged down the right side of the ice and snapped a shot past the Condors' goaltender. The Salmon Kings would take the lead a few minutes later when Ryan Wade took a pass from Wes Goldie and fired it past Fukufuji. The Condors would tie the game on a great individual effort by Alexander Naurov. The Condor controlled the puck below the goal line despite having Kevin Estrada dog-his-tracks, and then slipped a beautiful pass out to Eric Sonnenberg who blasted a one-timer past Thompson. The game would be tied 3-3 after 40 minutes.
The Salmon Kings took the lead just after the halfway mark of the third period when Ryan Wade worked a perfect give-and-go passing play with Wes Goldie who trickled it past Fukufuji for the 4-3 lead. Bakersfield would respond moments later when a Ryan Salvis shot beat Thompson to tie the game. Then off of a rebound the Condors' Mark Derlago picked up the puck on the goal line and banked it off Billy Thompson for the game winning goal. Condors 5 Salmon Kings 4. Victoria leads the series 3-2.
Victoria went 2/6=16.7% with the man advantage and Bakersfield went 1/3=33.3%. The Salmon Kings out shot the Condors 39-33.
