Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven North Division Semi-Final Series against the Elmira Jackals with a 2-1 overtime victory at First Arena in Elmira, New York. For the fifth consecutive game in the series, Elmira scored the game's first goal, but the Royals got a short-handed goal on the buzzer at the end of the second period from Charlie Kronschnabel, and Brock Hooton scored his second overtime game winner of the series to give Reading the win. Royals goaltender Danny Taylor (3-2; 27/28) won for the third time in the series; while Joel Martin (2-3; 36/38) sustained the loss. This marked Reading's second consecutive win in Elmira, and the teams head back to Reading for Game Six tomorrow at 5:05 pm.

The Jackals got on the board with just 1:45 remaining in the first period, when defenseman Elgin Reid sent a shot from the left point towards the Royals' goal. Reading defender Rob LaLonde stopped the shot with the blade of his skate at the top of the crease, but Elmira's Benoit Doucet swept in, took control and fired it home for his second goal of the series. Reading tied the game at one in the waning moments of the second period while Elmira was on the power play. After Reading dumped the puck into Elmira's end and it appeared time would expire, the Jackals threw the loose puck towards the left point, where Charlie Kronschnabel stepped up and blasted a one-timer that beat Martin high to the blocker side just before time in the period expired. Reading got the game winner at the 8:33 mark of the first overtime. Mike Salekin took a shot from the high slot that went wide of the net. Malcolm MacMillan corralled the loose puck and fed Brock Hooton in front of the Jackals' net; and Hooton slid the puck under the left pad of Martin for his second OT game winner of the series.
