Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release
The Kalamazoo Kings beat the Midwest Sliders 8-2 at EMU's Oestrike Stadium, and Kings manager Fran Riordan captured a new Frontier League record for wins.
Riordan has coached in the Frontier League for eight seasons, the last six at Kalamazoo. Tonight's victory put him at 413 total wins as manager, one more than any manager to ever coach in the league.
Kalamazoo scored first in the in the second inning when Destan Madonnen hit a two-run homer. The Sliders answered with a run of their own in the second when Jonnie Knoble scored on a Zack Pace double.
The Kings had three hits in the third to add another run, making the score 3-1.
Clay McCord doubled to leadoff the sixth, and scored on a Joash Brodin single.
Double plays from Midwest defense helped out Jeff Fischer on the mound, and kept the Sliders in the game early on. Three double plays, one in the third, fifth, and sixth helped shut down Kalamazoo scoring opportunities.
Shortstop Kyle Higgins singled and scored in the seventh for Kalamazoo making it 4-2.
Ben Barrone crushed one over the left field fence in the eighth, but Josh Short reached over and brought back the two-run homer. That hit would have tied it up, but the score remained 4-2.
Four runs in the eighth inning broke the game open for the Kings. Jett Ruiz three-run bomb highlighted Kalamazoo's scoring in the eighth.
Fischer threw 4 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs and striking out four in a losing effort.
Sunday the Sliders will travel and face the Washington Wild Things. The game will start at 6:35 p.m. Kyle Wink (1-0, 2.57) will make his third start for Midwest.
