Manchester Monarchs News Release
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Jeff Schultz, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.
Schultz, 27, appeared in 26 games for the Washington Capitals last season, recording three points (all assists) and 12 penalty minutes.
In 399 career NHL games (all with the Capitals), the 6-foot-6, 230-pound native of Calgary, Alberta has recorded 75 points (11-64=75), 133 penalty minutes and a plus-78 rating. Schultz has also appeared in 29 playoff games, posting one assist and 14 penalty minutes.
Schultz was drafted by Washington in the first round (27th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He accumulated a positive plus-minus in his first five NHL seasons (2006-07 through 2010-11) and led the NHL with a plus-50 in 2009-10. That same season he also posted career-high numbers in goals (three), assists (20), points (23) and penalty minutes (32).
During the 2011 playoffs, Schultz set an NHL post-season record by being on the ice for 119 consecutive minutes without his team being scored upon.
Before turning pro, Schultz played four seasons in juniors for the Western Hockey League's Calgary Hitmen.
